A disappointment
By Dean Esmay
I'm not sure how I stumbled upon this self-published book, but I do like fantasy literature and the reviews were so raving about its groundbreaking and masterful storytelling I picked it up on impulse.
While the book was not horrible, I must say it was marred by plotting that was rather hackneyed and disjointed. Major events happen with little buildup or warning. The characters mostly seem two-dimensional. The language is often odd and strained, with weird word-choices (like "disgustingness," just for example). Nor do you get a strong sense of time or place that these characters inhabit--describing the world it takes place in seems almost an afterthought.
A love interest between two primary characters is central to the book, yet the explanation for how they fall in love is very disjointed and abrupt, and you never get a strong feeling for the romance between the characters, there's no buildup to passion. The sex scenes are also rather airy and vague and not particularly passionate.
I've seen finer fantasy writing by countless authors. Nor is the "twist" of a male-to-female character all that interesting. Although I've never seen that done particularly well except in comedies, I've seen it done better than here.
I think Ms. Hignutt has the potential to be a good fantasy writer but I feel this effort falls flat. Those who like the transgendered theme for its own sake will probably enjoy this, but those looking for a solid and enjoyable fantasy adventure for its own sake will probably want to look elsewhere.
Hignutt so far has not lived up to the potential she shows in this book. Interesting concept, flawed execution.

A finely wrought fantasy
By Sherry Russell
Diana Hignutt has written a finely wrought fantasy. Fans of good and evil thrillers will delight in this suspenseful confident and intelligent novel with artistic dimensions galore. The author takes you on an exploration masterly crafted with startling intensity and meticulously shaded in all the right places propelling you to read it at a ballistic speed.
I have to say that the thought of reading this genre held all the essence of a mud puddle for me but after being told several times about this book, I had to giddy up and jump in. Moonsword ensnared me in the first several chapters with a gripping energetical pace combined with a certain emotional signature from the author.
When your flesh is weary from the world and you can use a therapeutic cocktail, read this vivid tale blending danger, destiny, courage and balances. Well done!

Feminine Mysteries
By Audrey Ihrig
According to Druid prophecy, "a Demon will arise who shall destroy the world." "The Demon shall be mighty, but not indestructible". "He shall be killed by no man, and by none born female and by no one who is delivered in birth by a living woman". Prince Tolian, a warrior prince and heir to the throne is the only one who potentially meets these qualifications since he was untimely ripped from his dead mother's womb.
This book has several interesting motifs with one of them being gender identity. Prince Tolian reluctantly agrees to become a woman to save the world. Prince Tolian considers suicide rather than face the humility of being a woman. How can he face his father, the king? The prince struggles with the belief that women are inferior. As a man, Prince Tobian is given a love potion and falls madly in love with a Druid maiden. Still in love and now a woman further contributes to his melancholic state.

Prince Tolian realizes that to defeat the Demon, develop her magic and to lead her troops in battle, it is necessary to come to terms with being a woman. Success depends on a positive mental outlook. The author, Dianna Hignutt draws upon her personal experiences to handle these complicated gender identity issues.
The story is fast paced and the author's writing style makes for an easy to read.
Moonsword is Dianna's first book and this reviewer is looking forward to her next book.

`Christiana had wanted to give herself totally to Jonathan. To be taken.'
By Grady Harp
Author Elizabeth SaFleur has the experience of serving as a public relations practitioner to Washington, DC clients for thirty years. Now she is a successful writer of erotic erotica romance and uses the moniker Elizabeth SaFleur `since her former business clients might be shocked at her new career choice.' LOVELY is Book 1 in a series she calls `Elite Doms of Washington' and it sizzles in what promises to be a very popular ongoing saga.

Elizabeth's obvious familiarity with the city of Washington DC is apparent from page one, and as we move briskly through this fascinating story, it is equally apparent that she is imbued with both a familiarity with the social life, the government types, and the shenanigans that only occasionally creep into the media. But back to the flavor established on page one: `The Jefferson Suite had a reputation. Everyone said so. Christiana Snow watched Henrick, the sous-chef, slip a red rose into the silver bud vase on the room service tray she'd been tasked to deliver. "There are some naughty stories about the guests that stay in that suite." He winked. "Let me take you to dinner, and I'll tell you all about it." She turned her back on Henrick's smirk-- and his eyes that never seemed to travel farther north than her neck. Since the day Christiana started working at The Oak she'd fought the desire to bend her knees to force his gaze to her face. It would only give him the wrong idea. Instead she threw back two ibuprofens with her milk and then set the glass into a nearby bin of dirty dishes. Gossip made her head hurt. She felt Henrick's eyes travel her body as she pushed the room service cart into the elevator. "For a reporter's daughter, you aren't very curious," he called after her. Curiosity wasn't the issue. The Oak, which stood mere blocks from the White House, attracted politicians and paparazzi-- and dozens of men, sporting earbuds attached to wires disappearing into their dark suits, sent to watch them both. It took real concentration to ignore the stories that the hotel's staff collected like trophies.'

Elizabeth offers a synopsis at the beginning of her book: `Congressman Jonathan Brond has mastered his work, his reputation and the art of sexual domination while keeping his family's political legacy intact. But a chance encounter with college student Christiana Snow promises something he didn't think was possible- meeting someone honest. When the charismatic man proposes a summer of sensual, sexual submission, Christiana leaps into his world-- the antidote to her bland life. But Washington, D.C. is an unforgiving place; soon gossip and scandal threatens their relationship. Yet, in a town of players, sometimes introducing a new game is the only way out. Who knew love would be the winning plan?'

Just the right mix of character development to make the steamy erotic scenes of BDSM peak, and Elizabeth writes these encounters with vivid reality. She knows what she is about, and given her extensive background in DC she adds to that a real talent for excellent writing. Grady Harp, July 15

The story wraps up beautifully with no cliffhanger
By Shurrn
I was not expecting the exciting narrative that Lovely provided. I was prepared for a deliciously kinky romance, but I was not expecting the suspense and high-stakes Washington drama.

This book is the first in Elizabeth SaFleur's Elite Doms of Washington Series, but it is a stand-alone novel. The story wraps up beautifully with no cliffhanger, and the series promises new couples for subsequent books.

There's some mild BDSM themes running through the story (as the series name suggests) I would categorize the level of play as "intro-level" which is appropriate considering our young female MC was going through life blissfully unaware of the D/s scene.

As a side note, I want to say that:
1) Thank you Sweet Jesus, Christiana was NOT a virgin.
2) Jonathan has the most intriguing 'playrooms' I think I've ever read.
3) In a world full of tropey best friends in Modern Romance (They usually fall into three categories: The slut, the gay guy, or the absentee roommate who only shows up for 'important talks') this book presents the reader with Avery - The daughter of a Federal judge. She's a manipulative little socialite who has been Christina's life-long friend. I hated Avery in the best possible way. Her character elicited an immediate negative reaction (read intense loathing) from me, and she kept my attention throughout the book.

Christiana Snow:
Christiana's character started off painfully shy and unsure, but she was so authentic and believable. Her character grew into a vibrant and strong woman as the story progressed, and it was a joy to watch her thrive as a submissive.

We quickly learn that she's been taking care of herself for a very long time. Her family life has been far from idealistic, but she's pressed on with her head held high.

This story begins during the summer between her Freshman and Sophomore years in college. She's working her ass off at a Washington DC restaurant in order to afford next year's tuition.

When she's not serving DC's rich and powerful, she's being dragged to charity galas by her friend Avery, or playing designated driver for her alcoholic father.

Not an ideal life, but one that Christina has a firm hold on... Until she meets one dashing Congressman and her whole world is turned upside-down.

Congressman Jonathan Brond:
Hello drool-worthy Congressman! Brond comes from a political line as famous as the Kennedy's, and he's working to restore his family's prestige. He's the youngest member of Congress ever to be elected, and he's single.

The definition of eligible.
(And Lickable... Just sayin')

Jonathan Brond sees Washington's blue-blooded socialites circling him like sharks and is determined to stay unattached. He has a solid plan for his future and relationships would only be a hindrance.

Congressman Bond isn't what I was expecting, and I was so wonderfully enthralled by his character. He has a genuine need to help everyone he can. He's not your standard politician, he plays the game because he feels like he has to redeem his family name and right the wrongs of his father.

Now would be a good time to mention that this book is dual-POV, so the reader gets a front row seat to Brond's inner-monologue as he falls hard for an extraordinary young woman.

Brond fought his instant attraction to the young and impressionable Christina Snow. The reasons to walk away were endless...
It's an election year,
She's nineteen years old,
Her father is a political journalist,
Her best friend keeps throwing herself at him...

Brond has no use for greedy little DC princesses like Avery, but he's helpless against his attraction to Christina. She's honest and kind, she isn't interested in wealth or power, she's independent and spirited - qualities Jonathan Brond doesn't see on Capital Hill.

Christiana Snow is offered the chance at a summer affair with DC's most eligible bachelor. She'll have to hide their relationship from her scheming best friend and her journalist father, but that's not all...

Jonathan Brond comes from a political family. He knows how to keep secrets, including a deliciously deviant preference for bondage and discipline.

The story progresses steadily with romance and suspense. Once this story gained momentum I was simply unable to put it down. There were several little twists and turns which surprised me and kept me on my toes.

Elizabeth SaFleur is a new-to-me author and I am impressed with what I've read so far. I think it's difficult to write a story with a wealthy sexual dominant and not conjure ghosts of so many books before, but Elizabeth SaFleur put a delicious DC spin on the subject, and I certainly enjoyed myself.

Gripping!
By Ria Restrepo
Lovely is a gripping erotic romance with BDSM themes. This is the first full-length stand alone book in the Elite Doms of Washington series. If you read the novella Holiday Ties, the timeline of the story is actually after the events in Lovely.

Christiana Snow plans to spend her summer earning her college tuition working at one of Washington DC's exclusive hotels, while juggling her alcoholic father and spoiled socialite best friend. When she delivers room service to the Jefferson Suite, she accidentally overhears Mrs. DeCord (Yvette from Holiday Ties) engaged in an elicit rendezvous with a man whose deep, commanding voice ignites her imagination and her desires.

Congressman Jonathan Brond has to be careful keeping his dominant proclivities under wraps -- especially in an election year -- but when he literally runs into Christiana at a charity event, he's immediately drawn to her. He knows getting involved with a nineteen-year-old with a reporter father is a bad idea, but he can't resist awakening Christiana's submissive nature. Besides, Christiana might be just the breath of fresh air he needs to unwind from the demands of his job and inferring father. But will he be able to let Christiana go at the end of the summer?

The chemistry between Jonathan and Christiana is enthralling and intensely erotic. Their romance is complicated not only by Jonathan's career and Christiana's personal demons, but a mysterious stalker who threatens to expose their relationship -- and perhaps something much worse.

Lovely is an extremely well-told story that expertly balances romance, sex, and intrigue. It's thrilling, highly erotic, emotional, suspenseful, and ultimately very satisfying. I'm looking forward to more of the Elite Doms of Washington!

A Seminal Book for Disney Studies
By D.K. P.
Although many Disney enthusiasts feel Schickel misrepresented Walt Disney in his book, Shickel's biography is a valuable piece of scholarship nonetheless. Not only does it provide people with a good overview of Walt's life and accomplishments, but the book does not shy away from providing a critical view of the man and his work. Schickel overtly connects Walt Disney the man, Disney the corporation, the entertainment industry, and American society in order to examine how Disney (man and machine) reflect and shape American culture.
It's true, Schickel can be a bit harsh with Walt Disney--his critique isn't as balanced as, for instance, the work of Steven Watts. Placing his work in historical context might help put this in perspective. Schickel took on a serious examination of Disney at a time when Disney was either a) praised as being merely for children (many were well-intentioned fans) or b) ignored or dismissed (usually by critics of "high" art). Schickel took Disney seriously: as a man, an artist, an entrepreneur, and a corporation. And he saw Disney as a major influence and example of then-contemporary America. Treating Disney as worthy of an in-depth critique, more than a brief biography or expose, is a high compliment in its own way.
Consider this fair warning. Readers who only want a "feel-good" biography about Walt Disney should not read this book. But Schickel makes a lot of good points about Disney, ones that provide food for thought. Even if you don't agree with Schickel, and I don't always do so, most of his observations are perceptive and worth further consideration. And as a result, Richard Schickel has earned his place in the canon of Disney Studies, a field of study that treats Disney seriously.

Walt Disney is critiqued by someone who appreciates him.
By A Customer
Unauthorized biographies are usually excuses to disembowel people whom the author doesn't like, but not this time. Schickel examines Walt Disney's virtues and vices, but sees them as a reflection of the virtues and vices of America. And like America, Disney is misunderstood by both his supporters and detractors. While Schickel finds fault in some of Disney's decisions and creations, he recognizes that Disney understood the American soul better than most self-styled intellectuals.

The book details the world in which Disney grew up, including cruelties usually glossed over in official Disney biographies. It examines Disney's films, theme park attractions and creations as both American myths and glimpses into Disney's worldview.

Within recent years paperback reprintings of the book have added an update chapter, "Disney Without Walt". The update reviews the financial problems and creative missteps of the Disney organization that almost resulted in an unfriendly takeover, and how Disney's spirit still affects the corporation's works. Schickel also took the opportunity to revise some judgements in the original book; it's a rare media critic that admits that he can make a mistake.

This is a critical biography--not a pr piece
By Franklin Steen
I first read this book in 1968. It was a revealing look at why Disney was able to capture the American public and the experiences he had as a child and young man that made him try to control all around him. Disneyland is cited as the ultimate example of Disney control. Since he did not understand the importance of the hotels around the park, others built them. To make up for the mistake he planned his park in central Florida for his total control, including hotels. Disney's films, particularly the nature films, are examples of his attempt to control what was around him. He sent out photographers, poorly paid but with terrific equipment, to film thousands of hours of nature in action. His editors then selected all of the segments in which the animals looked cute or human and created a "nature" film. This was the control of nature. The cartoons are the same. Disney is the character of Mickey Mouse, although he could not draw him. Anyway, there is lots more. After you read the book you will never see Disney work the same way. Still, you can enjoy it as I do, just as a better informed person. I give the book 5 stars--there is nothing better about Disney that I have seen.

Inner Presence: Consciousness as a Biological Phenomenon, by Antti Revonsuo

The question of consciousness is perhaps the most significant problem still unsolved by science. In Inner Presence, Antti Revonsuo proposes a novel approach to the study of consciousness that integrates findings from philosophy, psychology, and cognitive neuroscience into a coherent theoretical framework. Arguing that any fruitful scientific approach to the problem must consider both the subjective psychological reality of consciousness and the objective neurobiological reality, Revonsuo proposes that the best strategy for discovering the connection between these two realities is one of "biological realism," using tools of the empirical biological sciences. This approach, which he calls the "biological research program," provides a theoretical and philosophical foundation that contemporary study of consciousness lacks.

Revonsuo coins the term "world simulation metaphor" and uses this metaphor to develop a powerful way of thinking about consciousness as a biological system in the brain. This leads him to propose that the dreaming brain and visual consciousness are ideal model systems for empirical consciousness research. He offers a comprehensive overview and critical analysis of consciousness research and defends his approach against currently popular philosophical views, in particular against approaches that deny or externalize phenomenal consciousness, or claim that brain activity is not sufficient for consciousness. He systematically examines the principal issues in the science of consciousness—the contents of consciousness, the unity of consciousness and the binding problem, the explanatory gap and the neural correlates of consciousness, and the causal powers and function of consciousness.

Revonsuo draws together empirical data from a wide variety of sources, including dream research, brain imaging, neuropsychology, and evolutionary psychology, into the theoretical framework of the biological research program, thus pointing the way toward a unified biological science of consciousness. Applying imaginative thought experiments, Inner Presence reaches beyond the current state-of-the-art, revealing how the problem of consciousness may eventually be solved by future science.

Review
"The author offers a comprehensive and very readable review of the field of consciousness studies. Revonsuo argues for a causal role for phenomenology, claiming that 'subjective phenomenal consciousness is a real, natural biological phenomenon that literally resides within the confines of the brain.' He goes on to suggest ways to bridge the gap between the neural and the phenomenological levels in a style that makes his argument accessible to intelligent readers. By integrating the philosophy, psychology, and biology of consciousness, and by including dreaming consciousness within its purview, Inner Presence distinguishes itself from other fine books on the subject."
—David Kahn, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

About the Author
Antti Revonsuo is Professor of Cognitive Science in the School of Humanities and Informatics at the University of Skövde, Sweden, and Director of the Consciousness Research Group in the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Turku, Finland.

Good
By Carlos Camara
As someone who has followed consciousness studies for over a decade now, I ave begun to feel disapponted at how slowly progress has been made. Philosopher rarely change their ideas substantially (notable exceptions: Tye and Dennett), scientists cannot escape sticking to neural correlates and workspace theory, physicists mantain quantum theory is of the essence, etc. Having said that, I allways loved reading Revonsuo, his papers and collections (He edited a nice book back in 1994, if my memory does not fail me). He has a no nonsense approach, and in many ways his consciousness as virtual-reality model is very intuitively appealing. In this book he tris to compress his ideas into a full-lenght book and succeeds. He knows the field and uses empiric evidence with skill in order to support his more speculative ideas. He is clearly a naturalist, representationalist, and (maybe) reductionist, which is not uncommon, but still difficult to defend. There are a couple of chapters in the book 17 and 18 I believe, where the "level" or "structure" of conscisouness in the brain is discussed, which cannot be missed by anyone interested in the topic. This is as good as a neuroreductive explanation of consciousness can get. The final chapters on zombies and the function of consicousness are well argued. Of course, as any other book written by a scientist, philosophers will have a field day showing how his arguments fail for seome reason or other, either because of conceivability, supervenience, entailment, something Kim or Kripke said, but this should never prevent the biological realist in reading and appreciating a nice framework like what Revonsuo has elaborated for us. This is amust for consciousness-freaks,, especially for those of us who believe it can be explained in cognitive neuroscience terms.

Brilliant, but way too brilliant to be absorbed by an ordinary mind. A complex subject needs to be summarized and simplified to connect with ordinary, interested readers.

The Endless Knot: K2 Mountain of Dreams and Destiny (The Kurt Diemberger Omnibus), by Kurt Diemberger

'A monumental book … I defy anyone to read it and remain unmoved.' Stephen Venables, Alpine Journal Acclaimed as one of the most powerful accounts of mountain adventure and tragedy ever written, The Endless Knot is a harrowing account of the 1986 K2 disaster. A rare first-hand account from a survivor at the very epicentre of the drama, The Endless Knot describes the disaster in frank detail. Kurt Diemberger's account of the final days of success, accident, storm and escape during which five climbers died, including his partner Julie Tullis and the great British mountaineer Al Rouse, is lacerating in its sense of tragedy, loss and dogged survival. Only Diemberger and Willi Bauer escaped the mountain. K2 had claimed the lives of 13 climbers that summer. Kurt Diemberger is one of only two climbers to have made first ascents of two 8000-metre peaks, Broad Peak and Dhaulagiri. A superb mountaineer, the K2 trauma left him physically and emotionally ravaged, but it also marked him out as an instinctive and tenacious survivor. After a long period of recovery Diemberger published The Endless Knot and resumed life as a mountaineer, filmmaker and international lecturer.

If you enjoy reading about mountaineering and get some insight into the personalities of some of the famous climbers and what motivates them to climb some of the most dangerous mountains, like K-2, this is the book to read. I enjoyed reading it immensely and was unable to put the book down.

More ramblings than events
By D
Unlike the other reviewer, I was puting the book down alot. Finally after 1/4 way through, I just gave up. It does not read like other mountaineering books where you get a beginning, a middle and an end. I felt like I came in on the middle and 1/4 way through I was still there, bouncing from thought to thought without any cohesion. I realize since I didn't get very far, perhaps the beginning manifests itself and it will all make sense in the end.
