Heather Graham writing as Shannon Drake

In the days when Scotland lay under siege - from the Vikings who sailed from the north and the Norman English who came from the south - King David sought to unite his people into one nation. For this, he needed loyal warriors. Waryk de Graham soon proved the greatest of these fighters, and was knighted Lord Lion. But his honored position came with a price: a wife chosen for him by the king - a reluctant Viking bride.

Daughter of a Gaelic noblewoman and a Viking warlord, Mellyora MacAdin had an imagination that blazed with dreams of ancient myths and tales of adventure. She had already pledged her heart when she received King David's decree to marry the fierce Lord Lion. As he came to claim her, Mellyora swore to resist this barbarian nobleman - only to find herself a willing partner to his seduction. Now, torn between defiance and devotion, Mellyora must decide where her future truly lies, as she discovers the savagery in her family's blood, and the secrets of her husband's heart.

What an entertaining read!
By A Customer
Out of all of Miss Drake's books, this one has to be my favorite! I love this book so much, I'm not even sure how many times I've reread it in the past years, and I couldn't put it down the first time I read it. In a way, the story IS kind of typical. You've got the strong arrogant knight and the stubborn rebellious maiden who are forced to get married over duty. I found the book to be really fast paced. As with all of Shannon Drake's books, there's a lot of battle scenes involved so if u like a lot of that "brave and handsome knights in battle" stuff, this one's the one for you.
I really liked the heroine even though I hear a lot of complaints about how immature, bratty, and childish she was. I can actually understand how she must have felt living in an age where woman were considered weak and were powerless. She had such an exceptionally strong will to be free to rule her father's lands that it made her seem bratty. The key to the book is that she didn't hate her husband for who he was, but absolutely dispised the idea that she had been COMMANDED to marry him. Throw this heroine in with a mature but arrogant and fiery hero and you've got a really fun and entertaining read. I love their first encounter when the heroine tries to escape her fate of marriage by fleeing the King's castle.
I've read so many books where the two main characters are clawing each other in the throat one minute and then sleeping with each other in the next, totally forgetting the fact that they're suppose to be hating each other. I can say that this one's definitely different. You see a slow but gradual change in how the two characters feel toward each other...no jumping around. I felt that their personalities were more true and it made them seem more realistic. I hate the fact that by the end of most books, the characters who u fall in love with at the beginning of the book have totally changed...almost to the point where u feel as if they've become totally new characters. Shannon Drake did a good job of graduallly shaping her two main characters. At the end of the book, they're still the same two from the beginning even though it's obvious they've changed their ways and have fallen in love.
I would definitely recommand this book to anyone

Historical Scottland and Romance
By TSchlaack
One of the few unabridged offerings in the historical romance category, and a good choice from Brilliance. First off if you don't like romance stories this one is not for you. But, if you like Scottish/English romances this one is for you. You will follow the story of one of the King's champions (King David of Scotland that is) as he is finally "given his prize" for being a champion all these years. He is to get the Castle of Blue Isle and along with it the Heiress. But the heiress has other ideas and thinks that she can govern the lands herself, as she is the daughter of a Viking. She commences to run away which allows for an interesting first meeting of the warrior and the heiress.
There is a lot of intrigues, vengeance as well as history in this story. The author takes the time to talk a lot about the difference in what is happening in Scotland as well as England at the time. She also goes into the history of the isle and how things have changed over the years. I liked the story though at times it seemed a bit long.

Romance with a history lesson...
By A Customer
This is my first Shannon Drake book, so I didn't quite know what to expect. This book differs from other historical romances I've read, in that it reads like a "story" that happens to have romance as one of the primary focal points. It's not the typical historical romance where the focus is on the beauty of the "fair maiden," the prowess of the male character, and their sparring matches before they realize they're meant to be together. Sure there's some of that here too, but there's a story as well. This is evidenced by the length of time it takes before the two characters even kiss. I guess this is more of a "mature" historical romance. However, it was enjoyable enough that I'll try another of her books. While I still prefer the "typical" historical romance, the bottom line is, would I recommend it? The answer is yes, as long as you don't expect a novel similar to some of Kathleen Woodiwiss' best (and older) novels.

Not only does Marcus intend to extract DNA from the blood trapped in the Shroud of Turin, but he will clone the image upon it.

The experiment is a success and the masses embrace the clone as the embodiment of Christ, failing to recognize that science can replicate the body, but cannot touch the soul.

Devoid of this essential spirit, the clone is nothing more than a directionless vessel in need of a captain. A position quickly filled. The arrival of the clone begins the end to all humanity.

Poor dialog ruined the book.
By D. Shelby Churchill
I don't understand the five star reviews. The story was interesting, and could have been quite good. However, the main character, Reggie, was so irritating that I wanted to slap her silly. A grown woman in her thirties, a mother with behavior and dialog of a ditsy teenager. Much of the dialog was sophmorphic. So many times I wanted to give up on this book, but I pushed through. Thank goodness it is over.

Be warned
By Janina
This is the first book I have read where I had such a strong dislike for the main character, Reggie. The story was interesting but went on too long. Every chapter had Reggie being snarky, childish, juvenile and rude. I couldn't understand how any of the other characters could stand her. If the world depends on her to survive, I want out.

Everything Left Behind should have been
By Kd Reilly
The end of the world, brought on by a clone.
Given the subject matter -Antichrist, Armageddon-this book could have been a preachy sermon of being a Christian. Thankfully it is not. The twists and turns along the way are smart, and while I could have used a little more substance or in depth explications of Devante's means and modes of operation, the book as written is an absolute gem.
I liked that the book seems so real, warriors of god or not, our heroes are smart (and sometimes foul) mouthed, sassy, defiant and question everything even when they're questioning an angel, and thusly God. The characters ring true to their circumstances, their life experiences and their relationships. All and all a good read and one Hell of a ride

The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison: Ideology, Class, and Criminal Justice, by Jeffrey Reiman, Paul Leighton

Illustrates the issue of economic inequality within the American justice system. The best-selling text, The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison contends that the criminal justice system is biased against the poor from start to finish.  The authors argue that even before the process of arrest, trial, and sentencing, the system is biased against the poor in what it chooses to treat as crime.

The authors show that numerous acts of the well-off--such as their refusal to make workplaces safe, refusal to curtail deadly pollution, promotion of unnecessary surgery, and prescriptions for unnecessary drugs--cause as much harm as the acts of the poor that are treated as crimes. However, the dangerous acts of the well-off are almost never treated as crimes, and when they are, they are almost never treated as severely as the crimes of the poor.  Not only does the criminal justice system fail to protect against the harmful acts of well-off people, it also fails to remedy the causes of crime, such as poverty. This results in a large population of poor criminals in our prisons and in our media. The authors contend that the idea of crime as a work of the poor serves the interests of the rich and powerful while conveying a misleading notion that the real threat to Americans comes from the bottom of society rather than the top.

Review
"The book [has] a simple but counterintuitive thesis: the rich are actually committing society's most destructive crimes in terms of both financial damage and loss of human lives, but our criminal justice system is harshest toward the poorest Americans, whose crimes inflict the least damage." ― Zaid Jilani, Alternet.org

An enjoyable read
By EO731
This is the first time I've written a review for a book assigned to me in college, and probably the only one I will write since I have now completed my criminal justice degree. This text was one of FIVE books assigned to one course. Each time an assignment required a reading from this book, I looked forward to it. And I am in no way an over-achiever, I just truly enjoyed the book. It's an easy read; not dry like many texts you have to force yourself to read, and it was often witty and sarcastic while delivering vital information. Great at getting the point across and making it memorable. I recommend this book for any CJ courses discussing race, class, and crime.

Great Reference for Anyone Working with Magnetics
By Dr. Terrence McGarty
This is a great book about magnetic materials. It is a must for anyone using them as a matter of their work. The technical discussions are very readable and comprehensive. There is an excellent section on definitions which I found exceptionally useful. The latter part of the books does discuss the materials used by the company for whom the authors are employed but the materials is exceptionally useful. This is a great handbook for anyone working with magnetic materials.

First Footprints: The Epic Story of the First Australians, by Scott Cane

The epic story of Australia's Aboriginal people, as told through astonishing archaeological discoveries, ancient oral histories, and the largest and oldest art galleries on earth

Some 60,000 years ago, a small group of people landed on Australia's northern coast. They were the first oceanic mariners, and this great southern land was their new home. Gigantic mammals roamed the plains and enormous crocodiles, giant snakes, and goannas nestled in the estuaries and savannahs. This is the epic story of Australia's Aboriginal people. It is a story of ancient life on the driest continent on earth through the greatest environmental changes experienced in human history: ice ages, extreme drought, and inundating seas. Australia's first inhabitants were the first people to believe in an afterlife, cremate their dead, engrave representations of the human face, and depict human sound and emotion. They created new technologies, designed ornamentation, engaged in trade, and crafted the earliest documents of war. Ultimately, they developed a sustainable society based on shared religious tradition and far-reaching social networks across the length and breadth of the continent.

Cultural depth through a long, long history
By Harry
This is a beautifully illustrated account of the first 60,000 years of history for the First Australians. To put that into perspective, the period since the British settlers arrived could be represented by just one page of this large book. There is a very long and fascinating history prior to 1788, dating back to the first arrivals, their journey perhaps precipitated by the devastating eruption of Mt Toba in Sumatra. And the author describes the journey through the archipelago of Indonesia to the Australian continent (which was then considerably larger than its current size), utilising sea currents and prevailing winds to cover the comparatively short distances between islands.

Confronting new mega-fauna faced the first arrivals as they came, over many generations, to inhabit the whole continent. Fascinating stories are told through the world's oldest art galleries and the detritus of campsites and shelters occupied over thousands of years. The first Tasmanians have their own incredible story, first occupying the peninsula when it was home to massive glaciers, until they were subsequently isolated for thousands of years after flooding of the Bassian plain.

There were two little known subsequent migrations to the continent, one around 11,000 years ago brought in a rare genetic disorder and another around 5,000 years ago brought in a companion animal which eventually became the dingo. The story is told of the impact of climate on our first people - as coasts, deserts and glacial terrain shifted through ice ages and global warming, the people adapted and lived on.

This is a great history (also very readable) which all Australians should appreciate and acknowledge.
