Review above is Baloney
By A Customer
The above review is a bunch of baloney by someone who has never read the book. This book has nothing to do with handguns at all. It's about shotguns, and specifically about the two barrel variety. - - This happens to be an excellent book and a great resource for someone contemplating the purchase of a nice double gun. - -

Definitive Work
By Mouse Hunter
More McIntosh. I don't know who has the definitive work on shotguns, but this one must be close. Especially loved the section on spagetti shotguns. I can tell you up front that, for American guns, he prefers Foxes, but if you have read his works, you already know that.
This is just more McIntosh. And that is good, even though he has ruined my life. For years I've just considered guns to be tools like drills and saws .... tools to be used but not pampered. Then I discovered McIntosh, and Italian shotguns, and life has not been the same since.
I've been shooting Japanese. Totally reliable. Never had a problem. But it's like driving a Toyota. I want a Ferrari.
Michael is to blame.

Not Definitive but Very Good
By Marco Antonio Abarca
When you have already spent or are contemplating spending a lot of money on a fine shotgun, there arises a natural curiosity about your shotgun. You want to know everything about that gun and the people who made it. After reading all the magazine reviews and forum postings, for some there will still exist the desire to learn more. Michael McIntosh's "Best Guns" is the next step for satiating that curosity.

"Best Guns" follows the format of an international tour of shotgun manufacturers. He begins his tour with the American manufacturers and then crosses the ocean to Europe. All of the classic gunmakers of Great Britain are visited before he crosses over to the Continent. Along with brief chapers on the French and German gunmakers, McIntosh takes his readers to the Spanish and Italian firms.

Before recently passing away, Michael McIntosh was the dean of American shotgun writers. He earned this position through many years of hard work. There are not many people who have seen or experienced as much about the world of shotguns as Michael McIntosh. Is this the definitive book about the international world of shotguns? No, it is not. The industry is so large and diverse that it will take a publisher with very deep pockets to one day produce that definitive book. It is too bad that Michael McIntosh did not get the opportunity to write that definitive work. Until that work is one day published, "Best Shotguns" will serve as a well written guide for all shotgun enthusiasts.

Spring: A Spiritual Biography of the Season, by Gary Schmidt

As winter's austere power begins to fade, we notice the first signs of vigor and life returning to the world: delicate crocuses pushing through the damp earth; frogs croaking in the barely thawed ponds; the year's first warm breeze on our faces.

These first sure signs of spring bolster our spirits and remind us of the eternal cycle of death and rebirth, and also--more poignantly--of the steady march of time and our own advancing years. With each successive spring, it seems, we cherish the promise of renewed life more and more.

These thoughtfully chosen writings, poems and meditations--from Robert Frost, Lisa Couturier, William Blake and Lady Sarashina to the eighth-century Chinese poet Tu Fu and many others--both celebrate spring's re-emergence of life and evoke the season's delicate balance of growth and decay, youth and maturity, innocence and experience.

From Publishers Weekly
The author of Ecclesiastes once said, "To every thing there is a season." Now, thanks to Schmidt and Felch, to every season there is a fine spiritual portrait: this anthology concludes the exemplary seasonal series, ending on hope's high note. Sidestepping the obvious, the volume often opts for a more oblique reality. Sophisticated, accessible, and thoughtful, it understands that "the springtimes of our experience are not all robins and violets; they are grace crouched in need and pain." To wit, Donald Hall tells the truth about cursing beavers and black flies, but doesn't neglect the celebrations of a herd loosed on the new green of spring either. Organized into "Stirrings," "Awakenings," "Growth," "Pilgrimage" and "Dance," some of the finest musings are in the section introductions, alongside entries from Annie Dillard, Isak Dinesen, Barbara Kingsolver, Geoffrey Chaucer, Jane Kenyon, Gerard Manley Hopkins and many more. If the volume has a flaw it is that the North American entries concentrate on the possibly spring-starved Northeast, but poems, essays and remembrances that portray China, Africa and England help fill this minor deficit. Through poetry, prose, hymns and essays, this collection joyfully celebrates the glories of the season. (Mar.)

Boy Without a Flag: Tales of the South Bronx, by Abraham Rodriguez

A New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year

Abraham Rodriguez, Jr. captures what it's like to grow up too fast amid the crushing poverty of the South Bronx in this collection, a gritty slice of New York Latino life. The Boy Without a Flag is “about the rancid underbelly of the American Dream," says the author. "These are the kids no one likes to talk about; they are seen as the enemy by most people. I want to show them as they really are, not as society wishes them to be.” In these truth-telling stories about his neighborhood of Puerto Rican adolescents growing up in the South Bronx, Rodriguez introduces us to the youth who fight every day for survival in our cities.

From Publishers Weekly
Rodriguez chronicles the lives of Hispanic residents of the South Bronx in this harshly realistic and powerful debut collection. A 12-year-old girl crosses over into precocious womanhood while playing "war games" with the boys amid the broken brick of abandoned buildings. A 13-year-old boy celebrates his birthday with a "brand new police record" after committing his first burglary. A teenaged drug addict with dreams of having a baby gets an abortion instead after a series of events result in a negative epiphany. The first two stories are weakened by rhetoric about "oppression," but Rodriguez's sympathetic descriptions of his characters illuminate their fleeting joys. The author has a flair for street slang and the telling detail ("For free! Whea else but in America?" sasses the drug addict about a roach-ridden bureau she salvages from the street) and for portraying several different points of view; these enhance the narrative tension throughout and impress his vision on our memories. Author tour.

From School Library Journal
YA-- In an era of multicultural awareness, this collection of seven Hispanic short stories will make an impact. The teenagers in Rodriguez's world are not attractive; raised in poverty, they exhibit the problems of the inner city--teenage pregnancy, drug addiction, and petty crime. But more universal traits shine through. In the title story, the narrator , who refuses to salute the American flag because his father has taught him to resent U. S. imperialism in Puerto Rico, learns that adults don't have all the answers and that the world is run on compromises. Nilsa, in "No More War Games," is torn between childhood and sexual awareness as much as any middle-class 12-year-old. Gritty street language, phonetic spelling, and graphic descriptions enliven this as a "real-life" picture of the Bronx and provide the basis for lots of discussion.
- Diana C. Hirsch, Prince George's County Memorial Library System, MD

From Kirkus Reviews
In seven stories that chronicle growing up Puerto Rican in the South Bronx--surrounded by violence, promiscuous sex, and casual drug use--Rodriguez captures the quick, jagged rhythms of street life. In the title piece, the narrator, who wants to be a writer, becomes enamored of his father's stories about American imperialism and refuses to salute the flag. After a big brouhaha, the authorities finally bring the father, intimidated and ready for compromise, into the situation, and the boy, diminished but aware of the world's complexity, capitulates. ``No More War Games'' introduces a 12-year-old girl, Nilsa, who--in a few pages--grows up fast, moving from ``war games'' (bottles and rocks thrown with a vengeance) to an exploration of her emerging sexuality. ``Babies'' is a gritty underbelly-of-life fiction about a female narrator, a 16-year-old junkie, who, denying the strength of her habit, watches one friend give away a baby before getting pregnant herself and choosing an abortion. Likewise, in ``Elba,'' Rodriguez dramatizes the way a young mother tries to raise her baby and make a life with the father, but then, in despair, leaves the baby so that she can have a night out. In ``The Lotto,'' one of the most powerful stories here, Dahlia loses her innocence amid dreams of the Lotto but tests negative for pregnancy, whereupon pregnant Elba (who reappears) breaks off the friendship. ``Birthday Boy'' shows a kid's descent into petty crime and indifference after a childhood of betrayal, desertion, and abuse. ``Short Stop,'' about Marty the motorman, is more buoyant than the others, mostly because Marty, accosted on all sides by crazies, goes about his business and survives. Occasionally derivative in its use of dialect, but a debut that's almost always striking in its bleakness, its empathy, and its convincing detail. A couple of these pieces previously appeared in Story. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Seven Short Stories Of Tough Life
By Michael L. Slavin
I was introduced to the author by a short story of his that was included in Bronx Noir. This publication puts together a collection of short fast moving stories he has written. Most have to do with kids growing up under difficult conditions in the South Bronx. The exception is the story of a subway motorman who also had to deal with hard choices. The title story is about a bright young boy who was radicalized politically by leftist rhetoric from his father. When he reacted by refusing to stand and pledge allegiance to the flag at school his father was called in for a conference. Instead of standing up for his son the father said he couldn't understand the boys refusal to obey the rules. He went on to say
"My wife and I try to bring him up right....this is a shock." Of course the boy was disillusioned. I am not sympathetic to the story theme. In my view, if people emigrate here they are usually doing so in hope of finding a better life. Thus, they owe at least some loyalty to their new homeland. Otherwise they could return to where they came from. This book is 115 pages. It's definitely a worthwhile quick read.

Casualties of urban life
By Juan Valdez
The sordid lives of children growing up too fast in a wasteland
There is no regeneration or hope of escape available to these kids, hardened by the necessity of learning to defend themselves in the ghetto. No parents guide and comfort these children as they introduce each other to sex without love, violence and drugs. In these short stories of growing up in the South Bronx, Rodriguez elucidates the young casualties of most neglected communities. And he does it with a style and voice that transport the reader into these children's lives. After this sojourn, the reader will emerge shocked, angry and with a new sympathy for the so-called "at-risk" youth of urban life.

Tales of the South BX
By A Customer
I was kind of disappointed after reading this book...First of all I dont know why this book was connected with the South Bronx...the stuff in the book could've happened an any urban community/ghetto...and his writing style made it hard for me to get into a reading groove. it was a pretty quick read, 1 or 2 sittings, but I found myself getting bored so many times. Sometimes Rodriguez spent so much time describing the area that you never really get a chance to connect with the character. The best stories, I think, were Shortstop and the Lotto...Overall its a good read if you aren't easily distracted

About the Author
Thomas Hardy was born in 1840 in Dorchester, Dorset. He enrolled as a student in King s College, London, but never felt at ease there, seeing himself as socially inferior. This preoccupation with society, particularly the declining rural society, featured heavily in Hardy s novels, with many of his stories set in the fictional county of Wessex. Since his death in 1928, Hardy has been recognised as a significant poet, influencing The Movement poets in the 1950s and 1960s.

Great poems, but why not buy an anthology?
By Bill R. Moore
Thomas Hardy's second poetry collection, 1901's Poems of the Past and the Present, may be his best original volume and is likely my personal favorite. It definitely showed that the greatness of Wessex Tales, the first book of poetry by a writer who had long been famous and acclaimed for novels, was no fluke. The book may well have Hardy's best individual poems, including "The Darkling Thrush," perhaps his best known work. Other classics include "`I Said to Love,'" "A Broken Appointment," "The Ruined Maid," and "In Tenebris." Also here are some lesser-known works that are among my personal favorites: "To an Unborn Pauper Child," "The Respectable Burgher on `The Higher Criticism'," and "The Church-Builder." General quality aside, this collection is notable for several features distinguishing it from Hardy's other great poetry books. First, it begins with his famous Queen Victoria memorial. Second, it has a War Poems section that includes some of Hardy's most celebrated poems ("Drummer Hodge," etc.) as well as some of his strangest and most speculative: "The Souls of the Slain," "The Sick Battle-God," etc. This predated World War I, for which Hardy would also write some of the best and most well-known poems, and soon seemed eerily prophetic. The fact is particularly interesting in that "The Sick Battle-God," which closes the section, is uncharacteristically optimistic, declaring that mankind's bloodshed lust had ceased. Also setting this collection apart is the "Poems of Pilgrimage" section, a poetic memento of Hardy's Italy visit; some of his most interesting and personal work is here. Finally, a short section has a notable selection of the kind of material to which Hardy rarely turned - translations from various languages and other imitations. He proves surprisingly adept, especially when we remember that he was essentially self-taught, making us wonder what he could have produced if he had done more in this line. The "Miscellaneous" section meanwhile has several dozen excellent poems, including some of his most notable. All told, this is a great collection; its poems are essential to anyone who loves Hardy's verse and a good place for the curious to start.

However, we must remember that Hardy was extremely prolific over a very long period; even more notably, in striking contrast to nearly all artists, his quality never diminished. He was after all into his 60s when this book came out - long past the point even most of the best poets have lost the majority, or even all of, their greatness. Yet he put out great work well into his 80s. This means that, though everyone will inevitably have a favorite, all the poetry collections he released are of essentially equal greatness. An anthology is thus ideal, preferably a complete one. It will give far more enjoyment, especially as good ones can be found that cost little more than this single volume. Anyone wanting Hardy's poetry thus should skip to such an omnibus; only those who for some reason want Poems of the Past and the Present by itself need buy this.

From Publishers Weekly
Those looking to take a brief taster's tour through five sexually charged paranormal worlds may enjoy the stories and novellas served up in this anthology, but readers with an appetite for something a little more meaty likely won't be sated. Although Hamilton's name dominates the cover, her contribution is a meager 30 pages, which amounts to little more than a teaser for her next Anita Blake novel. Harris's offering is similarly slim and static, though it shows off the cleverness of Sookie Stackhouse, the psychic heroine of her Southern Vampire series (Dead to the World, etc.). By far, the collection's best offerings are Knight's "Galahad" and Taylor's "Blood Lust." In the former, a fledgling Majae (i.e., witch) teams up with the famed knight Sir Galahad, who's really a benevolent vampire, to destroy a nest of deadly cultist vampires. And in the latter, Taylor imagines a much more traditional world, wherein vampires can't touch anything sacrosanct and are organized hierarchically, a system the protagonists, a junior vampiress and a microbiologist-turned-vampire, are about to dismantle. The action moves swiftly in both stories, as does the romance, but like the other entries in this anthology, they lack depth and development. Nevertheless, this is a suitable introduction to the various worlds these authors have popularized. (Jan.)

Five views of of the vampire life
By Amazon Customer
The five short stories/novellas in this book are all well done. Each represents a different set of expectations concerning vampire lore, and all are entertaining. The only author I was unfamiliar with was Vickie Taylor, whose story "Blood Lust" is a romance set to vampire music. This is a boy loses wrong girl to bad guy, finds right girl, gets right girl, i.e. romance. The only thing I found disconcerting was when the characters uttered typical oaths like "good god" they clearly got a negative physical reaction which implied that they were dammed creatures. The story moved quickly and was funny.

Angela Knight, who writes erotic romances for Red Sage Publishing, has written a cute story set in Arthurian times, with interesting relationships between witches and vampires. Another romance, "Galahad" has a right male vampire and right female witch team, at odds with each other, defeat the bad vampires and unite in spite of mischevious witches and dragons. Cute, fast reading, and lots of graphic sex.

MaryJanice Davidson"s "Biting in Plain Sight" stars a vampire vetrinarian who lives in a small town with a don't ask, don't tell policy. After the death of her long-time human companion, she falls into a relationship with Liam, another mortal who has loved her from a distance for a number of years. She seeks out assistance in stoppping a rogue vampire and Liam goes along with her. We also get another opportunity to see the Vampire Majesties, Betsy Taylor and Eric Sinclair, who first came to our attention in Davidson's 2002 novel Undead and Unwed. This novella is a worth addition to Davidson's vampire writings.

Charlaine Harris gives us another visit with Sookie Stackhouse in "One Word Answer." First brought to us in "Dead Until Dark" and staring in the Southern Vampire Mysteries series, Sookie has the mystery of a dead vampire cousin's death to explain. With snappy dialogue and a few puns, the story moves quickly, and ends well. A well written story.

Finally, Laurell K. Hamilton's "The Girl Who Was Infatuated with Death" is from an earlier period in the Anita Blake series. This strong story, which helps bridge the period between Blue Moon and Obsidian Butterfly, helps us understand the fascination that Anita has for Jean Claude, her vampire lover. The story is about a girl with a fatal illness who wants to become a vampire rather than suffer amputation, and the mother who doesn't want this to happen. Mother hires Anita to find the daughter and stop the process. What the story helps us see is the growing moral ambivalence that Anita has over having a vampire lover, and serves as a good lead to Obsidian Butterfly. A marvelous story, well developed, too short.

Over all, this is an excellent collection of stories, worth every spare reading moment.

Awesome anthology!
By CoffeeGurl
I was excited about reading this anthology. After all, it features stories by Laurell K. Hamilton, Charlaine Harris and MaryJanice Davidson. Those are three of my very favorite sci-fi/fantasy authors. I look forward to reading the next installment of their respective vampire books and I figured Bite would be a nice appetizer before the main course. Even though I was disappointed with the fact that Hamilton and Harris's offerings are short stories instead of novellas, I enjoyed this book to the max. Hamilton's "The Girl Who Was Infatuated with Death" is an Anita Blake story that takes place some time around Blue Moon and Obsidian Butterfly. In other words, it takes place right before the series goes haywire. Anita wants to stop a teenage girl with bone cancer from turning into a vampire. But when Anita asks Jean-Claude to help find the vampire who will do the transition, old feelings and intense sexual tension ensue between them. In Charlaine Harris's "One Word Answer," Sookie Stackhouse discovers that a wayward cousin of hers had turned into a vampire and was recently murdered. In an attempt to offer her condolences, the Vampire Queen of Louisiana bestows a rather interesting favor upon Sookie. Davidson's "Biting in Plain Sight" is a fun novella about a vampire veterinarian who discovers she has a long-time admirer. When she finds out that a rogue vampire is responsible for the deaths of various teenage girls, she asks the Vampire Queen (Undead's Betsy Taylor) for help. Angela Knight's "Galahad" is about a young witch who travels to the world of King Arthur -- only that the people there are vampires. And Vickie Taylor's "Blood Lust" is about a fight over a stolen formula for synthetic blood for vampires.

I loved the stories of Laurell K. Hamilton and Charlaine Harris the most. With Hamilton, it was like going back to the time when the Anita Blake novels were still riveting. This story took place before the ardeur and metaphysical contacts began to monopolize the plot and before Micah and other expendable characters came along. The story, albeit short, was a real treat. And Harris's Sookie Stackhouse story is my favorite one in the book. It tells the reader in various levels that Bill is now just a trusted and reliable friend of Sookie's. There is still some tension there though. After all, he still cares for Sookie and tries to protect her at all cost. MaryJanice Davidson's novella is told in third person and it centers on two new characters, but it was fun to read about Betsy Taylor and friends from other characters' points of view. I am not a big follower of Angela Knight, and Vickie Taylor is unknown to me, but their stories were entertaining. The last three stories center more on romance than anything else. As a whole, Bite is an excellent anthology. Read this if you're a fan of any of the big authors in this offering.

GREAT READ, BUT!!!
By Traci King
For the most part I really enjoyed this book. But I have to warn those not familiar with these authors that if you have not read the previous related novels - Hamilton's Anita Blake series, Harris's Sookie Stackhouse vampire novels, Knight's - Knights of the Roundtable series - you are not going to truly understand what is going on. Since I have read them all it is difficult for me to know whether they could possbily stand on their own, but I think not. Hamilton's story was much too short to even be included as part of the anthology and it added nothing to the series. I feel Harris's story was similar in that it didn't add much to Sookie Stackhouse's adventures. On the other hand Knight's Galahad was a new adventure in her Round Table series that I liked very much and the Taylor story was new to me and worked quite well. I don't think it was part of a series, but if it was it certainly stood on its own. I recommend this anthology especially to those readers who know the authors' series. Even those stories that don't add much contain the characters we know and love, so are therefore still fun reads.

Bellissimo in italiano
By Chicco
I'm sorry if my English isn't so good, but I'm 15 and I'm italian...I think Harry Potter books are ideal for who wanna expand vocabulary while learning a foreign language, cos' HP is been translated in a hoard of languages. So, if you are learning the fantastic italian language, it's for you. The language used isn't formal, but the high quantity of new words can be frustrating...ma l'italiano non è poi così difficile...I think this is also the best of the series, so I advise it to everybody!

Six years out of date (copyrighted 2007)
By G. Snyder
While I have always thought that Thomas Guides were the best street maps available buyers should be aware that the book is six years out of date. The guide does not show the major change of the I-580 bypass (opened August of 2012) around the Highway 395 corridor between Reno and Washoe Valley, and even the earlier Highway 395 extension from the Carson City exit to Fairview Lane is missing. A minor but still irritating fact is that the back cover cites coverage of "Gardenville" than "Gardnerville". If you plan to use this guide primarily for navigating in the central Reno-Sparks area or Lake Tahoe shore it should suit your needs most handsomely, but be aware that there are definite omissions that Rand-McNally should address.

Excellent!
By Richard A. Jackson
Very well-done and easy to read when you want to find a location without a GPS. Even when you are using a GPS and work nights driving like I do, map books are not something you should just disregard. As a backup, a good book with an overall layout of where you're headed to is good to have, and the Thomas Guide is very easy on the eyes with color contrasts and such. Everything is laid out perfectly.

The Riddle of Amish Culture (Center Books in Anabaptist Studies), by Donald B. Kraybill

Since its publication in 1989, The Riddle of Amish Culture has become recognized as a classic work on one of America's most distinctive religious communities. But many changes have occurred within Amish society over the past decade, from westward migrations and a greater familiarity with technology to the dramatic shift away from farming into small business which is transforming Amish culture. For this revised edition, Donald B. Kraybill has taken these recent changes into account, incorporating new demographic research and new interviews he has conducted among the Amish. In addition, he includes a new chapter describing Amish recreation and social gatherings, and he applies the concept of "social capital" to his sensitive and penetrating interpretation of how the Amish have preserved their social networks and the solidarity of their community.

Review

This book is a perfect tool for introducing undergraduates to sociological analysis. Kraybill skillfully depicts an intriguing world that promotes collectivism against the dominant individualism. We come to understand how Amish life makes sense to those who adhere to it.

(Michèle Lamont Christian Century)

Beyond the tour buses and stereotypes lies the complex reality of Amish life. In this welcome update of a classic study, Donald B. Kraybill explores with deep insight and solid research the fascinating ways this fast-growing traditional community negotiates its evolving relationship with a modern world of business, tourism, shopping malls, and roller blades. No dry academic book, this beautifully written work exudes the juices of lived experience and conveys its author's profound respect for, and understanding of, Amish life.

(Paul Boyer, Editor-in-Chief, The Oxford Companion to United States History)

Carefully crafted, richly nuanced and accessible to both the informed reader and the novice, Donald Kraybill has once again produced a remarkably clear and meticulous study of one of North America's most intriguing religious minorities. The Riddle of Amish Culture opens a window into the complex reality of Amish society that crisscrosses the postmodern, modern, and traditional worlds.

(Thomas J. Meyers, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology, Goshen College, Goshen Indiana)

Donald Kraybill has written a brilliant exposition of Amish life. A sociological tour de force and must-read for those who wish to understand Amish culture.

(Peter Ester, Professor of Sociology, Tilburg University, The Netherlands)

I cannot think of a better way to introduce students to the richness of Amish life. The Riddle of Amish Culture takes the reader into the intricacies of Amish life and culture. Kraybill frames his rich narrative description with sophisticated analysis. While thoroughly accessible, Kraybill's book never insults the reader's intelligence. His treatment of Amish life resists stereotypes. In fact, he routinely explodes them.

(Stephen C. Ainlay, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of the College, and Professor of Sociology, College of the Holy Cross)

The Riddle of Amish Culture is essential reading for anyone who wants to unlock the 'mystery' of a fascinating people whose simple, community oriented ways have much to teach us. Professor Kraybill's extremely informative book is a valuable resource, every semester in my classes for teachers.

(Ed Daniels, Lecturer, Stony Brook University, National Board Certified Teacher)

Kraybill moves seamlessly between the fascinating details of Amish life and the meaning of modernity, illuminating both as he informs and provokes in the best tradition of accessible scholarship. [His] masterful analysis of Amish life provides the perfect springboard for students to explore the meaning of modernity and to question the assumptions of their own culture.

(Marc Olshan, Professor of Sociology, Alfred University)

Kraybill's masterful analysis of Amish life provides the perfect springboard for students to explore the meaning of modernity and to question the assumptions of their own culture.

(Marc Olshan, Professor of Sociology, Alfred University)

Kraybill's study of the Lancaster Amish community is an excellent introduction to the Old Order world for both students and general readers. He enables us to see the Amish not as leftovers from the past, but as 21st century people whose confrontation with modernity is guided by the same devotion to religious principles that marked their ancestors as radicals. This book helps us solve the riddles of Old Order society.

(Karen Johnson-Weiner, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, SUNY Potsdam)

Students of human nature and those baffled by the seeming inconsistencies of Amish culture will find compelling explanation in Donald Kraybill's The Riddle of Amish Culture. In the new research on youth groups, Kraybill explains how a time of testing the limits and tasting the fruits of worldliness in adolescence has a 'redeeming function.'.

(D. R. Elder, Professor of Humanities, The Ohio State University-ATI)

The well documented book is an excellent field trip. It includes informative chapters, excellent notes, thorough bibliography all presented with clarity and correctness.

(Richard Rouillard, Professor of English, Oklahoma City Community College)

From the Publisher
"The riddle of Amish culture in America is: how does it continue to dramatically prosper while unilaterally resisting the very core of mainstream American prosperity—technology? The surprising answer—adaptation and compromise—is given in loving detail in this great book."—Whole Earth Review

"Kraybill relies on his own and others' research, as well as on personal interviews with Amish men and women. The resulting book is a hybrid—written in a non-academic style that is appealing to the general reader who wishes to learn more about these unusual Americans, but also exploring the Amish in scholarly depth."—Philadelphia Inquirer

"A sophisticated portrayal of the apparently simple but actually very complex Amish . . . A well-illustrated guide, this work gives loving but unsentimental attention to the precarious culture under examination."—Christian Century

Engaging study of Amish relevance
By Paolo & Francesca
I couldn't have found a better book to introduce me to the Amish in America. Professor Kraybill's book is detailed, well organized, insightful, and well written. He illuminates Amish customs, beliefs, culture, and the ways the group has changed over the years. He answers the question, despite their peculiarity and restrictions on individual freedom, why have the Amish survived and thrived in modern times? High birthrates and low attrition have caused the Amish population to grow exponentially in the last century. Their venture into business, work ethic, and ability to adapt modern technology without compromising their values have enabled them to thrive financially. Most Amish are better off financially than moderns because they have a low cost of living, lots of help from friends and neighbors, and equity in the form of land passed down to them. Modern people have to deal with student debt, keeping up with consumer trends, maintaining an adequate wardrobe, high transportation and housing costs, high healthcare costs, etc. etc. Professor Kraybill emphasizes the benefits of Amish culture but also thoughtfully addresses the criticisms of Amish culture.

Even though Amish culture seems complicated with many rules and restrictions and confusing compromises, a few defining values guide their lifestyle. The first is the value of community over individualism. In Amish society, individual needs are subsumed to those of the community. The pursuit of personal achievements, higher education, artistic expression, and freedom of dress, occupation, and gender roles are curtailed in Amish society. But the individual receives many benefits from the community such as a sense of identity in a clearly defined culture; the closeness and support of family, neighbors, and church; a lifestyle that integrates work and home. The Amish value of humility explains their plain dress, their hard work ethic, and their eschewal of conspicuous consumption or anything that displays wealth or status. Even though some Amish may be very wealthy, they maintain equality in the community by using the same form of horse and buggy transportation, the same dress, and relatively modest furnishings in the home. Although trying to distinguish oneself through wealth, power, education is not allowed, the Amish also do not have members who are neglected or left in poverty. The sick and the elderly are cared for at home, and children are educated near the home, and those who experience hardship are given mutual aid.

The Amish seem strict in their rejection of technology but they have actually been very saavy in adapting to modernity. Technologies that enhance productivity have been adopted. Even though grid-powered electricity is not allowed, the Amish have adopted diesel powered engines, natural gas for heat and cooking, and air pressure powered appliances. Even solar and wind power are coming into use in the community. Modern furnishings, plumbing, use of medicines have made modern Amish life much more comfortable than in previous eras. What the Amish has preserved is their own education, religion, values, and sense of simplicity, equality, and community.

What would have made the book better is more case studies and more discussion of the drawbacks of Amish life. The Amish admirably avoids many of the ills of modern society. My feeling though, is that gender equality is absent in Amish culture, and they have no way of dealing with gay or transgendered individuals. What about the practice of shunning people who do not conform? Denying children the pursuit of learning or occupation of their choice, confining women to the home and raising large families, are rather problematic. A more honest discussion of these topics would have been good.

I really appreciated the discussion of Amish culture's relevance to modern society in the last chapter. The Amish serve as a foil to our individualistic and materialistic society. It helps us compare what works and what doesn't. Despite not having modern conveniences and personal choice, the Amish have high quality lifestyles where crime is low, divorce is low, poverty is low. While ambitious people would feel oppressed in Amish society, regular people also do not have to struggle so hard to have a basic standard of living. Their willingness to stay close to home has helped them build social and material capital over generations. The choice of the Amish to remain true to their traditional values is ironically modern because they understand what modernity offers them and have chosen another way. They are an important group to help us understand ourselves as much as they are fascinating on their own.

Thorough, expert description
By bookaddict
This is an extensive treatment of many questions relating to Amish culture by one of this country's foremost experts. It places the Amish in the historical context of the Anabaptist movement in Europe and covers differences in Mennonite and Amish communities in this country, although it focuses on the Lancaster Amish with whom Kraybill has worked most extensively. Kraybill uses sociological principles to explain practices that might seem inconsistent or contradictory; thus, he makes sense of the apparent riddles. I live in Amish country and found that this very informative book answered the questions I had developed over the years. The book would be especially interesting to those already interested in the Amish culture, but most Americans would benefit from some consideration of the value of living apart from the world with a focus on family, faith, and community as opposed to our obsession with materialism and individualism. Although it is more work to read a scholarly book like this, I think it is much more balanced and informative than some of the popular memoirs written by a single individual who has left the Amish community.

Note that this book has photographs and several diagrams and tables that are hard to view on the original Kindle. On the other hand, reading it on a Kindle makes it easy to search for important terms and historical facts presented earlier--important in an long book if you read it over several weeks, as I did.

Best book on the subject. No contest. Read this if you want to understand Amish culture.

If you're trying to make sense of a complex culture, especially if you expected it to be plain and simple, this is the book to read. I've bought (and read) many books related to the Amish, but nothing else matches this book for a thorough and in-depth picture of what makes them like us... and very different, too.
