this book is a mistake

This book is a warmed over, self-published dissertation from The Institute for Transpersonal Psychology. The reviews and descriptions are misleading. (Georg Feuerstein should be ashamed of himself.) There is little useful information here--just retelling from some primary but mostly secondary sources. The book is superficial; there is little spiritual or psychological depth. How can anyone who writes seriously about Kundalini write this: "Sexual and materialistic excesses such as those of Bhagvan Rajneesh, who taught tantric practices in both India and the U.S., have further damaged the reputation of this ancient art, which is greatly misunderstood in the West." That's all she has to say about the Bhagvan, an incredibly influential and controversial teacher. Even if you disagree with his thought or practice how is it possible to write about Kundalini in the West and not reference his prolific contributions? If there is any virtue here it is that if you read at night the pedantic style will invite Morpheus almost instantaneously. Don't waste your money. There are many far better books available.

Waste of time and money - worst instructions ever

The animals are cute, but really nothing all that special... you can find comparable patterns for free by searching around on the web.

However, I was working on a doll for a friend, and wanted to give it a shirt. The little boy pattern has a shirt. Perfect, right?

Wrong.

These are the worst instructions I have ever tried to follow. I am an experienced (15+ years) crocheter, and have been making amigurumis for the last 4 years, but I was completely unable to replicate her results. When I got to the shoulder, I was lost: do I make it in turned rows? In the round? If in rows, where does it connect back to the main part of the shirt? Then how many stitches do I go over for the next shoulder? I tried 8 different ways of doing this, and still could not make sense of it.

Also, I had to dig through the glossary at the back of the book to figure out that the author assumes you will make a turning stitch for each row, when not working in the round. Maybe that's the standard, but I am used to patterns always including the turning stitch, especially when working on amigurumis, which can have very exacting construction due to the small size.

Maybe if the author had spent less time on cute little back stories for each doll in the book and more time on quality instructions, this book could have value. Or perhaps she could have included some work-in-progress photos, or even just a crochet diagram (I don't much like working from these, but they're better than nonsensical instructions).

The nail in the coffin was when I actually sought out the author's blog and sent her an email, hoping for some help. I asked, as nicely as possible, for some clarifications on the instructions, some pictures that would explain how to do it, anything at all. I was not vague -- I specifically said I was having trouble with the shoulder on the little boy's shirt. But I never heard one word in reply. So the instructions suck, and the author is not at all interested in helping her customers.

Super-Cute Crochet: Over 35 Adorable Animals and Friends to Make is a fun book if you love to crochet Amigurumi toys! I found this book to be full of lovely patterns and pictures -- all easy to do! Since I create toys and dolls for my grandchildren and hope to donate more handmade toys to a hospital nearby, the more patterns that I can get, the better! I, personally, love the book! If you are only looking for ONE extremely easy and inexpensive book -- I recommend buying Easy Crochet Critters (Leisure Arts #75266) by Lion Brand Yarn; however, if you are looking forward to making a large amount of toys -- BUY THIS BOOK!

Since I AM purchasing this book which isn't here yet, this is more of a review criticism of the negative comment that the animals are "tiny"
This book is for crocheting AMIGURIMIs Which by Defination means "SMALL, Cute". Naturally they are ting abd neabt for collectors and or children's poket animals.
IF youi want BIGGER toys all you have to do is change the yarn and hook size upward!

How Asia Was Lost

Between the covers of John T. Flynn's excellent book, "While You Slept", the discerning reader will find a key to one of history's greatest mysteries: how Asia was lost to communism. For herein, Flynn reveals the machinations of the many communists and communist sympathizers within the government of the United States, and the print media who so shaped American government policy that China tragically fell to the Soviet onslaught.

I had the good fortune to read this important and excellent book right after having read Whittaker Chambers' "Witness". And it is remarkable how we see the similar characters playing leading roles, such as convicted Soviet agents Alger Hiss and Harry Dexter White. It is stunning that these Soviet agents played such key roles within the government of the United States. And it is equally remarkable that their roles have been so little discussed by our court historians, who have no real and plausible explanation for the fall of China.

Flynn writes beautifully. The book is a wonder, and a joy. We strongly recommend it to all who would know justice and love mercy, while yet there is time.

"Willing and eager partners in ... the sacrifice of China"

While not perhaps as memorable or timeless a work as his "As We go Marching" or the invaluable "The Roosevelt Myth," this 1951 book by John T. Flynn is nevertheless an important one. It's also strangely timely: some of the issues and personalities surrounding the question of "Who lost China?" have been raised again in Ann Coulter's recent "Treason." Coulter readers interested in exploring the question more fully could do far worse than to track down a copy of this title.
John T. Flynn, of course, was a tireless slayer of sacred cows, and one of the central figures of the anti-Rooseveltian, anti-New Deal coalition now remembered (by some) as the Old Right. This book deals largely with the question of Communist domination of Asia, in particular China and Korea. But most of the attention is focused in the U.S., and particularly upon the men -- some dupes, some Comsymps (ah, for the good old days of Red-baiting language), and a few dedicated Soviet agents -- in Washington and elsewhere who made that domination possible.
A key part of Flynn's thesis is that the print, film, and radio media were deliberately employed to soften Americans' natural opposition to Communist totalitarianism, and to prepare them for the idea of Soviet "partnership" in the post-World War II era. A large section of the book is filled with examples of pro-Communist propaganda in all three media, and the silencing (contra the "McCarthyism" myth) of critics of the Russian or Chinese Communists. In partnership with the pro-Communist agitprop (another nearly forgotten term!) were the missteps and blunders committed by political leaders, particularly FDR, Marshall, and Acheson. Truman, too, receives his fair share of blame. But as Flynn notes, most of the seeds of "our tragedy in Asia" were planted during the FDR years.
Does any of this matter any more? Flynn's lessons about the propagandistic power of the media are certainly still relevant and worthy of deep study. And though the guns are silent, China and Korea are certainly still in the headlines. Unraveling the mythology of the rise of Communism in Asia is essential for grappling with the situation there today. Perhaps most important of all is taking the time yet again to knock the pins out from under the vastly inflated reputations of FDR and Truman. Few men have ever performed that valuable service better than John T. Flynn. He deserves to be remembered, and read, with our thanks.

My Calculus Textbook: A Necessary Evil

Buying this book was easy and great! Reading it and working through it.... not so much. Being a student here at Harvard, I know Robin Gottlieb personally and I can really see her persona come through in her textbook. Many of the key concepts and theorems and problems are written in a sort of prose form, which gives the textbook the unique characteristic of reading like a novel. I still don't know if I like this approach. Also, I feel like the material is extremely watered-down and we're being taught on a 7th grade level, but that's probably just my class, regardless of the textbook we use. The book itself is pretty heavy, thick, & substantial. And yes, even here at Harvard I will get laughed at for lugging around this huge chunk of text.

Now we're talking!

Where the last two books lacked momentum and action, this one has all that. The first two books didn't accumulate a lot of stars, 3 and 3,5, but this book on the other hand, has taken a major jump up the scale.

You know when you start reading a book, and you get that feeling where you just have to read a little longer before you put it down? The last two books (again) didn't have that. To put it short: they were slow. Very slow.

Dev is still evolving, and all the questions left from "Make You" still stands. Will Base join the hunters? When will "the Big Bad" turn up? Who will live, and who will die?

This is a well executed book, my only regret being that the end felt a little rushed. That said: if you can get through the first two books, this one is well worth your time. I loved the Ava Delaney series, and in this book the author presents some of the same writing skills as she did back then (I haven't gotten aroung to read "Lost souls" yet, but I will!).

Right now it's actually sad to see the story ends. Now, when it finally turned out to be so well written! Anyways, three books is enough for the storyline, so I guess it's a good thing she didn't try to squeeze out another one, just to keep it going. :)

Loved it, good storyline

I really enjoyed this series, what I really like the most was that the characters didn't have no special gift or any kind of superpowers, their were just normal people who learn how to fight the evil vampires...In many ways I felt in love with Devlin and Base and Callum and Maisy and the rest of the possy..Even thou I felt that the story line was a bit rush, but I still recommend it...

I was so disappointed that the series has finished I was looking forward to more of devlin and base kicking butt. For me the ending was a little blah but I get it. I'm sad to see this go.

Well worth a read!

"Human Capital Analytics" is the sort of book I've been looking for a long time. It combines a good business overview of HR issues with specific, actionable steps to studying issues in my company. The "how you do it" part seems to be skipped in the books I've read. The case studies are excellent, drawn from actual companies, not the "ABC Company" type stuff that you usually get, and the advice on how to actually get the data, clean it up, and analyze alone makes the book worth getting. The math sections point out how to wade through things like regression and find the one or two numbers that you actually should care about. The section about how to present the results, giving tips on charts, what kinds of documents to write, etc., seems pretty useful, although I haven't gotten that far in my own work. Well worth a read!
