Easy Classical Guitar Duets: Book/CD Pack

I like this collection of duets, especially the last (and most difficult one), "Pavane, Op.50" by Gabriel Faure. Incredibly beautiful. I have played it many times (even with Charles Duncan himself). However, I don't let the fact that I know him personally and have played many duets with him over the years influence my opinion of his books. As a matter of fact, I have dissed a couple of them.

The duets progress from very, very easy (great for newbie guitarists) to higher levels of difficulty. Each piece is also broken down by parts (1st guitar and 2nd guitar parts) by level of difficulty. I teach classical guitar and use these duets frequently to teach my students how to play with another guitarist. The pieces in the book are all very good pieces written by famous composers (Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Dowland, etc...) but of course they have been greatly simplified for inexperienced guitarists, but are still very lovely to listen too.

The CD that comes with it is very helpful to play along with so that the guitar student can practice either part with the recording and get a good feel for his/her part. I haven't tried using my PC to play the CD yet so I don't know about that problem mentioned in the previous review, I've just played it in my boom box and it sounds great.

Just remember that it is a book of EASY duets. If you are wanting some intermediate or advanced scores, this book won't have them. I recommend this book to beginning guitarists. The notation is clear, NO TAB (yeah!) and helpful fingerings are given.

CD DOESN'T PLAY

I presume the manufacturer is intensionally selling defective, unplayable cd's because of other revues indicating this same fact. Amazon was supposed to follow up on this complaint, but I never received a response to my conversation with an Amazon rep. This is the first time I've ever been dissatisfied with any product I've bought thru Amazon.

A Rewarding Read

Ken Hodgson has penned a splendid and authentic look at one of the early west's most controversial and fascinating characters, Alfred Packer. Hodgson has a genius for catching the time and place, and for peering into the mind of a man who was accused of killing and eating his partners. This book is a very rewarding read.

Al Packer had an interesting life once he left home. His search led across the prairie,across the sea,from the Florida swamps to the Colorado gold rush. Once he found gold life became a series of misadventures and a host of unbelievable yet true events that illuminate the times from 1860 to 1910.
Ken Hodgson is a western writer who writes a book you won't be able to put down without extreme anticipation. As they say: Truth is stranger than fiction.

A Guy you Love to Hate

I grew up in the South and I knew a few weasels like Alfred Packer. He's the kind of good ole boy who'll come across as friendly and even charming. But if you start hanging with him, sooner or later, you'll probably get shafted because underneath the smooth exterior is a heart made out of cold gray steel. Packer would sell your soul for a dollar if it would come out to his advantage. And this guy actually lived and breathed. On the other hand, I've met some of the finest people I've ever known in the South--salt of the earth. But God deliver us from the Alfred Packers.
