What a great book on GAD, and I would suggest to anyone with GAD.

This book is very well written, and considers the audience, and their different backgrounds. I have suffered with GAD for years, and was amazed this book identified the strategies, and beliefs I was currently using. Learning that by following these strategies I was reinforcing the continual behaviour, leading to my GAD.

Diferenca entre emagrecer e perder peso

Quem comprou esse livro fui eu, Marcela, pela conta do meu pai Manuel.

Livro extremamente interessante para todas as pessoas que querem entender quimica e biologicamente o que acontece no seu corpo quando vc faz diferentes tipos de exercicios com o objetivo de perder gordura. Muitas pessoas nao entendem a diferenca entre perder peso na balanca e reamente emagrecer, e esse livro diferencia bem as duas coisas e prova de uma vez por todas que aerobicos nao emagrecem como muitas pessoas podem imaginar. O grande diferencial pra mim sao todos os testes clinicos que o Paulo apresenta no livro (com todas as referencias, entao se vc duvidar pode pesquisar). Ele nao se baseia apenas no conhecimento dele e na sua experiencia, mas sim em testes reais realizados/publicados pelos mais diversos autores ao redor do mundo. Eu realmente fiquei impressionada com a quantidade de testes que ele apresenta no decorrer do livro.

Este livro pode se mostrar util para muito pessoas que estao fazendo dieta, se matando por horas na academia e mesmo assim nao veem resultados pq nao fazem musculacao. O unico "defeito" pra mim eh que o livro eh mto claro no que nao funciona e no que vc nao deve fazer, mas peca em te apresentar um plano claro do que fazer para atingir seus objetivos - provavelmente emagrecer para 90% das pessoas que compram o livro. Isso vc encontra no outro livro dele, "Bases Cientificas do Treinamento de Hipertrofia" que tambem comprei e estou lendo agora. Deixarei uma review quando terminar.

Legal scholar and anti-pornography activist Catherine MacKinnon approached journalist Yaron Svoray about "snuff films," because he was the only person who'd said in print that he'd seen such a film (while undercover investigating neo-Nazis for his book In Hitler's Shadow), in which a girl was raped and murdered. "It is my misfortune," Svoray says, "to have been born with a need to look under the carpet." After a bit of soul-searching, he undertook the investigation described in this book--a series of adventures with many dead ends and mishaps, some of which are quite funny. (This reviewer was impressed by his tenacity.) The writing, while sincere, is overdramatized and synoptic, leaving the reader to decide whether to believe Svoray's hair-raising tales. This book is important for what it says about how (in Svoray's words) "blood sells," and it will no doubt spark much discussion among those who doubt the existence of snuff films.

Investigative journalist Svoray, a former Israeli detective, described his infiltration of Germany's neo-Nazi movement in In Hitler's Shadow (LJ 10/15/94). The present work launches a one-man investigation into the netherworld of the "snuff" film?a pornographic video in which someone is actually killed. Hopscotching around the world, Svoray finds scant evidence, barely described and none of it retained. Given that almost all the names have been changed (Svoray's claim that he showed a snuff video to actor Robert De Niro is a startling exception) and that other omissions are admitted, credibility becomes an issue here. There is much padding with cloak-and-dagger and family-life episodes. Because the author concludes that there was "no source" for what he was seeking, his material might have worked better as a feature article. Not a necessary purchase for most libraries.

Former Israeli detective Svoray spent much time and effort running down the truth about snuff films, pornography in which a cast member is killed during sex. Such stuff is difficult and expensive to obtain or view. Searching for it involves trolling an underworld in which the searcher must always be alert for danger. With Hughes' help, Svoray evokes the shroudedness and mystery of his quest, which is occasionally reminiscent of the old TV series The Prisoner, in which the protagonist had no idea what the people he is dealing with know or want. Svoray found real snuff films more than once, but the onscreen slaughter he reports is not as repulsive as the milieu he explored to see it. Filmed murder is, after all, a step removed from life, but the people who must be endured in order to watch it are still there when the lights come up. A deeply disturbing book for those with the courage and patience to enjoy it. Mike Tribby

Over the top, lacks real insight, but compelling

Admittedly reads more like a potboiler thriller at times, and I strongly suspect it was written with the big screen in mind - understandable, since much of the book is comprised of the author's financial concerns & what his obsession with finding out the truth behind snuff films drives him to do and spend, both monetarily and emotionally.
When his investigation came to end, the author had a problem (another reviewer already gives away the ending, so I don't think I'm divulging any secrets): he hadn't managed to come up with the goods - he'd finally gotten his hands on a tape, but it was stolen from him while he was detained in a Serbian police station. So what do you do? His answer is to make a book out of the subjective experience of hunting down the truth - what he goes through, how it affects his family life, his psychological state, the potentially life-threatening situations he encounters, the characters he meets & how he gets on with them. This makes some sense, because the reader wants to understand the mental and moral state of people who could actually make, enjoy, or be in any way involved with these films, as well as what effects such images have on 'normal' people - as Svoray says, once you've seen them, there's no going back. Unfortunately Svoray doesn't have the psychological insight to make much of this (a much better example of real insight into monstrosity and evil is Christopher Browning's "Ordinary Men," which looks at a single battallion in Poland as a case study to understand how so many people could have committed the Holocaust) - great credit to him for his investigative skills, but his constant efforts at casting himself as moral judge disallow him from genuine understanding, and his portraits come straight from stock characters from standard thrillers. This problem potentially undermines the book's veracity, but one can also argue that he merely understands these people on the same terms borrowed from Hollywood, or that his co-writer (a screenwriter) compressed his character portraits to make for a fast read.
The book is a very quick read and compelling at times, and the reader must admire the author's bravado. So, in the end, does his claim to have seen real snuff films stand up? What proof does he offer? Here's something: he claims to have set up a viewing for the actor Robert De Niro and a friend of De Niro's; he recounts a conversation between the two men in which they say they believed the film was real; and De Niro's press agent has confirmed the viewing. So, while Svoray couldn't come up with any hard evidence, the De Niro story is pretty convincing that such films do in fact exist, and that there is indeed pure evil (in Svoray's terms) in the world.

Shooting for the stars...

...this endeavour narrowly avoids plummeting to Earth.
As it is, it's just not all that good. By all means, do not pay full price for this book. Like the other reviewers, I will not spoil the 'ending', and I will also say that there is hardly a shred of evidence or compelling presentation to make you really believe this is all true.
It's not investigative journalism. It's not entirely schlock, but it certainly is not the compelling story as promised by the slipcover.
The story is littered with all sorts of events, but not a shred of documentation; he even states that he avoids a lot of truth by changing names, places, times, events. Sadly, this also destroys what little credibility the story has. Even the name-dropping he does, doesn't carry much weight (and you'd think Robert De Niro's name would carry some weight, no?)
It's not a waste of time... but it's not the gripping story that one hopes it would be.

I am getting a little tired of reading reviews written by people who go into a reading experience working on the assumption that what the writer has chosen to write about simply doesn't exist--i.e., snuff films, ritual abuse, etc. Certainly the author presents serious credentials as an investigative journalist. It is extremely frustrating to read through the book and not have him come up with the object his search--absolute proof. But that, after all, is what separates nonfiction from fiction--the answers are rarely neat and satisfying. This writer made a commitment to the victims of the darkest side of the pornography industry, and he went as far as he could. Finally, for those who dismiss snuff as an impossibility--do you remember that little historical event known as the Holocaust? If the Allies had not reached the camps in the time, the Germans would have destroyed every trace of the concentration camps and the atrocities that took place there. Watch the documentary "Anne Frank Remembered", in which a camp survivor remembers standing outside naked in the snow in Auschwitz II. A Nazi officer stops to speak to him, saying, "You know, you're never going to survive this. But even if you do--no one will ever believe what we did to you people." Those who traffic in evil count on the refusal of the unvictimized to believe what human nature is capable of.

State of the art

This book is fantastic, and it has really set the standards for identification guides to come. Furthermore it has a size that makes it possible for you to bring it with you in the field.
The book has absolutely everything you need to know about seabirds. It is written in a very logical way and the plates are very good. The first 23 pages are an introduction to the subject, an overview of the glossary etc. Pages that makes it possible for you to understand the describtions of the birds later in the book - even if you are a beginner.
After the introduction there is 88 plates with drawings of all the seabirds in the world, including subspecies. All the plates are in colour and has been drawn from field notes and photos. The paintings are great and they will be a very good help when you are out there doing the birding.
After the section with the plates there is describtions of all the birds. After the describtions there are distribution maps. The describtions are very good, but the maps could have been slightly bigger, in order to give the reader a better chance to find out the (more or less) exact distribution of the species.
I haven't seen any books on seabirds that are compareable to this on. It is the state of the art when it comes to seabirds and fieldguides. You simply need this book if you are into seabirds. Buy it!

An odd job

This is the revised edition of "Seabirds - an identification guide" by Peter Harrison. The author, who actually looks like an old fashioned sea captain, and his wife Carol spent seven years on the world's oceans to gather information for this field guide to end all field guides. Gee, don't these guys have day jobs? Maybe they do, after a fashion: Harrison worked as a deckhand aboard trawlers and crayfishing boats to more easily study and sketch seabirds. I wonder what his crew mates made of that!

As you might have guessed, "Seabirds" is illustrated by deckhand Harrison himself. Personally, I'm a bird book-watcher rather than a birdwatcher, so I tend to buy bird books for aesthetic reasons. I admit that Harrisonian aesthetics weren't really to my liking, but then, I'm a Jonsson aficionado. The selection of species is also somewhat arbitrary: very few shorebirds, but a whole lot of pelicans, cormorants, loons and grebes. Even grebes that don't live anywhere near the sea have been included. The exceedingly rare Atitlan Grebe can be found only in one lake in Guatemala (if you're lucky). That's a seabird? As for ducks, a representative selection has been included, but only in an appendix with illustrations in black-and-white. Do crayfishers have a secret conflict with eiders?

Otherwise, "Seabirds" looks like most field guides are supposed to look like. There's an extensive colour plate section, and in the main text section we get information on distribution, juveniles, various plumages, similar species and some special tips concerning identification. A problem is that the maps are tucked away in a third section at the back of the book. The colour plates don't indicate distribution. I was somewhat surprised to learn that both the Northern and the Southern Giant Petrels are confined to the South Atlantic, and that the "southern" species have a more northern range! Any explanation? Or just one of those "odd jobs"?

Still, I don't doubt that this is the field guide if your favourite haunts include South Georgia, Kerguelen, Antarctica or...Lake Atitlan. Four stars!

Kenneth C. Wallis, M.D. is a practising psychiatrist in Salt Lake City, Utah and Sacramento, California and is Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Utah. His special interest in teaching the history and origins of psychoanalysis, analysis of dreams, the works of Freud and Jung, and biological psychiatry is well recognized by graduate students, trainees and clinicians.

James L. Poulton, Ph.D. is a practising psychologist in Salt Lake City, Utah and is an Adjunct Professor in Psychology and a Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at the University of Utah. He has taught graduate and post-graduate seminars in both the theory and practice of psychotherapy. With a background in both philosophy and psychology, Dr. Poulton is well known for his thoughtful approach to the problems of psychology and psychoanalytic theory.
