Sackman adds to the extensive writings on Ishi, the last survivor of the Yahi tribe of Northern California, by delving into the unique relationship between the “wild” man and Alfred Kroeber, head of the Museum of Anthropology at Berkeley. With the Sierra Club, Kroeber and Ishi took nature walks around San Francisco, and Ishi shared his knowledge of the artifacts at the museum with his mentor, who had him installed there as a janitor. Three years after emerging from the wild in 1911, Ishi joins Kroeber and others for a three-week tour of his former homeland, which proved to be an emotional visit as it now seemed to be a strange and lonely place. The Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915 is a symbolic moment as Ishi appears with a Blackfeet group as their guest of honor, and Kroeber bristles at ethnographic displays he described as of the “cheap show variety.” The encounter between these two men “embodied the whole story of the American frontier,” Sackman maintains, a story still debated today. --Deborah Donovan

Wild Men is terrific

Sackman has taken a well know story and crafted it into a marvelous excursion into the lives of two fascinating individuals. Along the way his story takes many highways and byways, bringing together a wealth of information and insights into turn-of-the century San Francisco,, native American history, the study of anthropology, train travel, and so much more. A fascinating read, highlighted by numerous photos.

A study of the post-captive (albeit voluntary) life of Ishi.

Not what I had hoped, but excellent nonetheless. A fine homage to a human being who had reached the end of his ability to live and thrive in his lifelong environment and ventured into a world beyond his comprehension, yet in spite of language and cultural barriers managed to teach what he knew to the extent of his ability. Well worth reading just for the shift in paradigm between two cultures, in my opinion.

Don't waste your money

Is it possible that anybody would buy this book instead of the one Shakespeare wrote himself? It isn't that hard: he writes in our Modern English. It just takes a little effort up front in the reading, but it's well worth it. Especially this play, which is so strange and lovely and full of magic. Don't waste your money, or your time, with stuff like this.

I love that the editorial blurb here says what that William Shakespeare is one of the greatest writers in the English language, as it hawks a product that slices up that very language.

Johansen borrows openly from the movies Hollywood thinks women love (Grace talks to horses, though she balks at being called a horse whisperer), crafts family scenes (Marvot playing chess with his son; the Pair with their colt) and offers a mother and father who defend the world from criminals while yearning for domestic tranquillity. I've got to go against the crowd here.

I wouldn't call this her best. I wouldn't even put it in the top ten. It's a grab bag of genre cliches loosely held together by momentum with a sub-plot that literally made me say "That's IT?" I mean, seriously - that's the pivotal thing that makes the bad guy hate them and causes everything to roll? Because it's pretty absurd. It's not even suspend your disbelief absurd, it's just cartoonish.

Essentially, you have a Woman On The Run with a Child In Danger and she's been Abandoned By The CIA so only her ExLover The Mercenary can help her, but she doesn't trust him because, well, that's what she does. Suddenly things are exploding, bad guys are proving their oh so bad by threating to sexually assualt children, and the Woman Must Face Down Evil to prevail. Except the evil is so laughably evil that you wonder he survived as long as he did. And the Way She Can Succeed is so implausible that you really can't take it seriously. It requires magic animals and weather shamans.

Dreadful book

I am constantly amazed at what can get published. The plot of this book requires the reader to suspend any sense of logic and rationality. In fact, the plot is so far-fetched I thought it was a parody. The characters are not believable at all. The reader is supposed to believe that Mozart has been re-incarnated as Frankie. Um right. And I am the queen of Spain. This is the first book by the author that I have read and I am not anxious to pick up another one. I found the plot lines and character developments to be insultingly stupid. Almost too embarassed to donate this book. I pray for the trees sacrificed to make this.

It has been this price for at least a few years, when it went up from $3.00 on weekends and holidays. It is ILLEGAL to go off trail or climb at Daley Ranch. While there is a lot of recreation going on at Daley Ranch, with miles of trails to hike and/or ride, it is still a preserve. Trail maps are available at the trailheads. Thusfar, visitors found to be in places other than a designated trail are in violation of Escondido Municipal Code, and will be cited. Please help us protect this beautiful place for all to enjoy. About the Author

Charles Platt is a Contributing Editor and regular columnist for Make magazine, where he writes about electronics. He is the author of the highly successful introductory hands-on book, Make:Electronics, and is writing a sequel to that book in addition to volumes 2 and 3 of the Encyclopedia of Electronic Components.

Platt was a Senior Writer for Wired magazine, and has written various computer books. As a prototype designer, he created semi-automated rapid cooling devices with medical applications, and air-deployable equipment for first responders. He was the sole author of four mathematical-graphics software packages, and has been fascinated by electronics since he put together a telephone answering machine from a tape recorder and military-surplus relays at age 15. He lives in a Northern Arizona wilderness area, where he has his own workshop for prototype fabrication and projects that he writes about for Make magazine.

Another excellent reference book in the series!

We finally got this book after it sat pre-ordered in our Amazon cart for a year and a half! Check out the extensive preview in the product description to see if it is what you are looking for. Platt gives a very good description of the purpose of the book when he writes that "...this is a reference book, not a tutorial.," and explains that each entry is made to stand on its own so information may be repeated in other sections. He also states that it is "oriented toward practicality rather than theory."
Typical chapters include sections telling you (with words, diagrams, and photos):
"What it Does"
"Symbol Variants" (diagrams showing different schematic symbols used)
"How it Works"
"How to Use it"
"Variants" (Similar components and also if it comes in surface-mount, etc)
"Values" (Numbers associated with it such as amp rating, etc.)
"What Can Go Wrong" (Things you might screw up when working with the component. Very helpful!)

Some entries also have information telling you the pros and cons to using one component over another.

We use the book as an educational source for me (Non-Science degree) and as a refresher for my husband (Electrical Engineering degree) and it helps us to figure out the best components to use in our own electronics projects. Lots of pictures and figures to reference.

Excellent reference book and I will again be waiting for the third book! I used to poke fun at all the people who would moan about George R.R. Martin doing anything except finishing his series, but I had to check myself when I had thoughts of doing a Google Alert for this author to make sure he was still writing books!

As an aspiring electrical engineer these books have been an unbelievable asset. I have been absolutely blown away by some of the electrical components that are defined in this series. Quite literally I have never heard of some of these parts. The knowledge that this series has available is easily beyond the scope of almost any other book on engineering I have ever read. The parts defined in this book will prove invaluable in the future and I hope to learn more in the future from Mr. Platt and co.

Great intro into electronic components and how they work..

I just love paging thru it reading about all of the electronic components, how they work, and some simple circuts with them as examples. If you are a fixer or tinkerer and aren't strong in electronics or electrical theory, then do yourself a favor and buy this 3 volume set. Wiring a power transistor incorrectly makes for a loud noise and things flashing! If you consider yourself a Maker, then you need this!
