A great new book by Cheryl Bradshaw...

Disclaimer: I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I am a fan of Cheryl’s Sloane Monroe series so I was excited to read this new book. I was not disappointed.
The book begins 15 years in the past when Quinn and Evie first become friends. Fast forward to present times when Quinn is faced with dealing with the death of her dearest and closest friend. She makes a vow to find Evie’s killer… no matter what it takes.
The story follows Quinn as she returns home… she is faced with her fractured relationships with her sister, Astrid and with her old boyfriend, Bo, who is now a detective working on the case as well as dealing with Evie’s eccentric grandmother, Ruby. Twists and turns keep the reader guessing until the end when the truth is revealed.
I liked the book… it was well written and kept my interest. I like mysteries so I had my own ideas as to whom the murderer might be and I enjoyed following Quinn’s search for justice. It was a quick read.. and one you will want to keep reading just to see how it ends. The book ends in a rather open ended way so I was left to wonder if more books are planned for Quinn.

A page turning must read. Read it in 2 days!!

This book was awesome!! I'm not a fast reader & I can usually read a couple chapters then put the book down. I devoured this book in 2 days. This book kept me guessing all the way through. I thought I had the killer figured out a couple different times. But I found out I was wrong at the end. I never guessed the killer till I was told. Definitely a page turner for me. I loved the way the characters were intertwined with each other & there is a romance also. Quinn & Bo were great & even had some parts that brought a smile or chuckle. But the mystery was something only Cheryl Bradshaw could master!! If your looking for a book you can sink your teeth into & enjoy to the very last page. This is the one!!

Great Mystery

I’m a fan of Cheryl Bradshaw’s Sloane Monroe series and was excited to read this stand alone. This too was a great book with characters that were very likable and well developed. The characters were a bit reminiscent of one of Bradshaw’s other books I’d recently read, but the plot was like nothing she’s written before. Quinn Montgomery wakes from an accident after hearing the news of her best friend’s death. Finding that it was actually a murder, she makes a promise to herself to find out who the killer is and make them pay. Quinn returns home to her small town to investigate and finds many distractions in her old friends, her parents, and her estranged sister, which only add to the complications of finding her best friend’s killer. This book had me suspecting every person in the tiny town until the killer was finally revealed in a murderous showdown. Another suspenseful book by Bradshaw.

About the Author

THE PACK IN ILLINOIS is the story of Blue Rivers and her entrée into a brand new world she never knew existed. Blue has been having issues with anxiety and depression since her parents split up. Now her ex-boyfriend is stalking her, her grandmother is deathly ill, and her best friend has been ignoring her for a long time. When her best friend rescues her she meets the one person who makes her feel alive and happy again – Rider Hayde. Yet, she’s in for new adventures and new threats as she becomes part of Rider’s world. THE PACK IN ILLINOIS has some flaws: spelling errors, grammatical issues, etc. The ending is also very abrupt, but it reminded me of the part one end of a two part television episode. The overall writing is good and I see a lot of promise for this author’s future works. Happily, I was drawn into the story enough to overlook some of the flaws. THE PACK IN ILLINOIS appears to be the beginning of what could become a very strong trilogy/series.

Christie's Christmas is Charming

Christie's Christmas is the story of a girl of twelve who in one short day changes many around her. And over the coming months we learn of what her kindness, generosity of spirit and friendly behavior brings in return. It's a great book.

Christie was born on Christmas day. For her 12th birthday she is given a train ticket to visit her wealthy relative in a town some 20 miles distant. Her younger brother is ten and a bit envious of the trip. He takes milk with the Dad to the train station each day so is familiar with the trains. Still, he wishes he were the elder brother and getting this opportunity.

Funds are very tight!

This book was recommended at the end of a Grace Livingston Hill story. It features a girl and rather reminds me of a younger female version of the Horatio Alger stories I so love. The young lady is a Christian and simply does what she thinks is correct. She is very kind but not too saccharine .

Christie struggles.

As a result of her quick actions she saves a life. She takes care of a baby and cheers the grumpy guy who is late. Prayer is mentioned and religion does play a part in making her a better individual. For young ladies I suspect this is just the ticket for a happy read. It's a chapter book and one I'd have read my own duo had I been aware of it when they were younger.

Recommended, especially for little girls. The girl is a true heroine and you'll like her. I did!

This is the best Isabella Alden book yet! I have been thoroughly challenged and uplifted by this sweet story. Roughly 100 years has passed since these words were penned, but the truths set into the sweet story are as fresh, real and life changing as when the ink was still drying.

Thorough and readable book for the developing clinician and others who work with people who stutter.

This is a thorough and readable book designed for the emerging clinician. The author speaks from the point of view of a person who stutters as well as one well read in the research surrounding cause, nature and treatment of stuttering.

I would be interested to hear from families of and people who stutter to see if this book is an appropriate, in-depth, resource for them as well.

Great info, bad images

The content itself in this book is very interesting and helpful in learning about how to assess and treat stuttering. However, my only complaint Is that all of the figures in the book were not printed out well. All of the images are fuzzy and texxt is blurry so it makes it difficult to read.

This book was great for synthesizing material scattered all over journals. The figures were excellent and the case studies added relevance to the textual material. I liked the fair handed treatment of controversies, such as the classification of ischemic and nonischemic vein occlusions.

Sacred and Profane Love

There is a Jean-Luc Godard segment in one of those compilation films so popular in Europe during the 1960s. Imagine a high class brothel of the future -- located, as I recall, at an airport. The client requests an assignation and draws a prostitute who all but rapes him. He tries to open a conversation with her, but she is all action and no talk. The client protests to the management and draws another one who dresses in frills like a character from Jane Austen and recites romantic poetry. You've probably already guessed what happens: This one is all talk and no action.
I yield to no one in my admiration of Balzac, whom I consider one of the greatest story-tellers of all time. It is very obvious that the character of Madame Blanche-Henriette de Mortsauf meant something special to the author in his life: Her piety and fine-tuned sensibility, however, don't come across well in our time. Women who suffer endlessly and fritter their lives away in sighs tend to give rise to a frustrated "Oh, come off it already!"
The opposite of Mme de Mortsauf is the fascinating Arabelle, Marchionesse of Dudley, who conquers the narrator, Felix de Vandenesse, and keeps him in thrall with "caresses never before enjoyed by any man." Alas, Balzac uses the multi-talented Arabelle primarily as a warning to all Frenchmen how cold-hearted the British are. We are tantalized but far from fulfilled.
Call me a dirty old man, if you will, but I would rather that Balzac and Felix spent more time with Dudley and a whole lot less with Mme de Mortsauf. As it is, the latter dies horribly of her excessive sensibility, and Felix walks away from her grave resolved to live a life of which the angelic Mme de Mortsauf would have approved.
We all know that Balzac made no such resolution in his own life. Despite his monkish pretensions, the author spent all his life pursuing women. When, after a multi-year courtship, he finally snared his Countess, he died within a year.
It sounds as if I did not like LILY OF THE VALLEY. Far from it, I liked it a great deal; but do not see it as one of the author's more successful works. And yet, even at his worst, Balzac is better than most writers at their best, as when Felix muses "I loved an angel and a demon, equally beautiful, one of them adorned with all the virtues which hatred of our imperfections induces us to hurt; the other with all the vices which our selfishness prompts us to deify." Read it and judge for yourself.

beautiful love story

This was apparently Balzac's favourite work and I can see why. It's written as a letter from a young man to his lover who has demanded to know his past. Felix has a sad early life, rejected by his mother (a theme Balzac refers to in 'a woman of thirty'). But he then meets the beautiful Mme de Mortsauf and the developing love between them- maternal at first, later passionate, yet at her insistence always chaste- forms the main part of the book. The description of the Mortsauf family with the irascible, almost insane husband, who makes his wife's life so hard, and the two fragile children, and of the Touraine countryside are exquisite. The years of unfulfilled love roll by and Felix falls prey to a sensuous Englishwoman,causing much torment to his true love. 'Lady Arabelle was the mistress of the flesh; Mme de Mortsauf was the wife of the spirit'. It's a beautiful book and finishes with a short response from Felix's lover to his revelations...Balzac at his best.

To the untrained observer, the question of why tadpoles--those bug-like creatures that metamorphose into frogs--exist is one of life's many mysteries. It is something of a mystery to biologists as well; they posit that the tadpole's small body size is an evolutionary advantage in a world of large-mouthed predators, but they remain uncertain as to how nature came to afford frogs this advantage in the first place.

Indeed, there is much that scientists do not know about tadpoles, a theme that volume editors Roy McDiarmid and Ronald Altig sound several times during this comprehensive survey of what is known about anuran larvae, including details of gross anatomy, feeding behavior, and ecology. Part of the problem, they suggest, is that data are lacking; field scientists have not invested much time in collecting larvae and tadpoles in various stages of development, and the morphological diversity of tadpoles is so immense that no one scientist can hope to know every aspect of their life histories and behaviors. "Less than a third of all tadpoles have been described reasonably well," the editors write, "and the number of entries that have no data, including endotrophs and exotrophs, shows that much work remains." The editors add that in a time when frogs and other amphibian species are disappearing around the world as a result of climatic change and habitat destruction, it is ever more important that such collections be undertaken.

Helpful but not all inclusive

This book does a great job at describing and showing anuran tadpoles and key identification features. I only wish that it covered all frogs and toads including Hylidae, Bufonidae, etc. This book is very useful in identifying the Ranids but can't help with the other species. It is a worthwhile book to add to your library or office collection.

Now-retired CIA officer Devine built a career (1967–98) in which he ascended from entry-level employee to the top echelon of the organization’s clandestine service. Amid candid reflections on his experiences, Devine advances opinions about the worth of covert operations, which he supports in general. Commenting on them specifically via his own involvement, Devine defends the CIA’s 1973 role in Chile and its 1980s arming of anti-Soviet Afghan rebels. But he critiques the CIA’s entanglement in the Iran-Contra scandal of the mid-1980s. Devine’s colorful anecdotes convey a lively sense of how a CIA officer works as a street-level case officer, a chief of station, and an executive managing the entire Directorate of Operations, all roles that Devine fulfilled and in which he takes palpable pride. The exception to success that Devine confronts is Aldrich Ames, the Russian mole whose betrayal cost many CIA agents their lives. In the Service of the CIA

THIS IS NOT A NOVEL! After reading the book and all the reviews, I think the most important thing that any potential reader needs to know is that this is not, and was obviously not intended to compete with spy novels. I say this because several of the negative reviews that I have read complain about the book being boring and having no intrigue or drama. If you are looking for a story that is full of suspense, this is not a book that you will enjoy. If, on the other hand, you are interested in how our nation collects information and influences events in other countries, this is an excellent choice. I think you will find this an easy read. The coauthor, Vernon Loeb, is a professional writer and the book is well written and polished. While some discussions of this book may make it sound dry, I did not find the first part of this book that way. The second part of the book, covering his time in private business after he left the CIA, might be more appropriate in a separate book.

It has been suggested that this is not a book for the average reader. While I cannot be the judge of that, I do think it is a good book for the average voter. Many comments that I have read about this book express emotion and a political opinion. When a citizen chooses to vote, they vote not only for an individual but for the policies, that individual supports. Understanding how the CIA functions helps us understand how these policies are carried out. While it was not discussed in this book, a reader might, for instance, come away from reading it contemplating how different the outcome would have been for the interest of the United States if the CIA had carried out the operations in Benghazi, Libya in place of Ambassador Stevens, who was killed. The ambassador was a high profile and high value target and his killing was a major success for our enemies. It also had huge political implications in this country. I think that reading this book will help the average person better understand our involvement in other countries.

WARNING! This book does have an agenda. I find it to be an excellent example of CIA tradecraft. As Mr. Devine explains in his book, much of the work of a covert agent is to sell others, individuals and whole populations, on a worldview that enhances the interest of the United States. He also worked in covert operations and supports the use of covert actions to bring about regime change in foreign countries. Mr. Devine was stationed in Chile when Allende was overthrown. When he states that “we did not promote the military coup that overthrew President Salvador Allende in 1973” he is apparently choosing his words carefully and referring specifically to the CIA. He was good at his job and he still is. This book markets Mr. Devine, the CIA, and covert actions well. That said, it is both a fascinating and informative volume.

Modern Bible for Covert Operations -- Joins Dulles, Helms, Colby as a Classic

I strongly recommend this book! I happily disclose that I received the book from the publisher at my request and that I have worked for Jack directly. I have also reviewed hundreds of books on Intelligence. This is easily the most insightful and sophisticated look at the important covert action aspect of the intelligence business. This critical tool of statecraft was established in the charter that created the CIA during the Truman administration. It gave CIA the mandate to carry out "special activities as directed by the President." Over his 32-year career, Jack was uniquely involved in a wide range of these covert activities, including the ousting of Allende in Chile, the Iran Contra affair, the successful defeat of the Russians in Afghanistan, the hunt for drug Kingpin Pablo Escobar and the reinstatement of Aristide in Haiti.

He also weaves in his direct experiences with Rick Ames, the Soviet mole inside CIA as well as the hunt for Robert Hanssen, the mole inside the FBI. Moreover, he shares important insights about his tenure as the chief of all CIA worldwide operations in the mid 90"s. That said, his main contribution is setting out the good and bad characteristics of covert action. He does it with candor , wit and wisdom.

He articulates the characteristics of smart Covert Action (CA), one I might call the "Devine Doctrine," for successful covert operations. The seven principles are:

01 Viable partners in place
02 Real-time accurate information
03 Adequate resources
04 Bipartisan political support
05 A direct threat to US security
06 Proportionality
07 A reasonable prospect for success

While I don't share his view about the priority of CA and would rather emphasize decision-support (creating ethical evidence-based tailored intelligence for Whole of Government so that the public interest is served across every mission area), I must emphasize that CA is a major part of intelligence and this book is a necessary read for followers of intelligence. If and when covert action and clandestine operations are necessary, this is the Bible, or in military terms, "REF A." This book is valuable to multiple audiences. For the professional audience -- young case officers and rising managers -- this is the new bible, a bit thin on some important topics of interest to me, but deep where it matters most.

It is also noteworthy that Good Hunting has an added benefit in his describing his post-CIA work in the private sector where he along with prominent NYC financial crimes attorney Stanley Arkin have created a very successful private sector intelligence business. There is very little written on the subject at the high end of the industry. The conclusion of the book is a mix of success stories from commercial intelligence that should open many reader's eyes -- Jack has raised the bar on what can be done in emerging marketplaces particularly, at Wall Street levels of speed and value -- and I totally embrace his prescriptions for modest reform in how the US Government makes decisions, goes to war, and wages peace and commerce. All this from an individual that could arguably be called the most successful US spy in modern history, and also one of the most successful commercial intelligence pioneers in modern history.

This is a superbly-crafted book that took me seven hours to appreciate, and another hour to organize my notes and develop this review. While it can and should be read on the train to and from NYC, it is more properly appreciated as the tip of the iceberg, an invitation to get serious about the evolving craft of intelligence. Each chapter in this book covers an extraordinary aspect of clandestine operations; I have been directly involved in some of these. I give the book high marks for communicating important lessons, and for avoiding disclosure of details that would detract from their intended narrative.

There are so many details in this book that are valuable (e.g. $1000 as standard monthly salary for an asset) and so much that I agree with (e.g. torture does not work, exiles are generally impotent problem children) this is absolutely a book that merits careful reading -- this is not just a spy story, this is a management, leadership, and practical handbook. I would rate it as the modern equivalent of the books by Dulles, Helms, and Colby.

A Flawed Jewel

This book is not an autobiography, but a memoir of the highlights of Jack Devine’s 32 year career as a CIA intelligence officer and his subsequent career as a successful director of a private sector commercial intelligence firm. Also Devine was, for much of his service with CIA, a covert action officer rather than a conventional intelligence officer. Covert action is clearly where his interest was directed throughout his CIA career. As a result this book contains some excellent guidance on the necessary ingredients for successful covert action as well as some uniquely useful pointers in the execution of such action.

That said his book provides no real insights on CIA activities during Devine’s tenure at CIA. His accounts of his first covet action tour in Chile and CIA’s involvement in the overthrow of Salvador Allende are simply based on publicly available information and CIA’s stock public denial of any involvement in the coup. This can be said for his accounts of CIA gun running to the Mujahedeen Insurgency against the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. Indeed in his account of this operation he makes an astonishing mistake about Osama bin Laden. He categorically declares, “there is no evidence [he] ever received weapons or other material support from the CIA” and by referring to him as “a minor blip on our screen and his support came directly from the Arab States.” As with many of Devine’s declarations in this book his claims do not square with the evidence. Osama bin Laden actually joined the Mujahedin Insurgency in 1979 and proceeded to assist its operations by providing the Mujahedin fighters with money, arms, fighters from the Arab States. It makes no sense to categorically declare that no CIA sponsored arms ever reached bin Laden.

In short this is a very flawed book in many ways. Devine is undoubtedly a good covert action officer and manager, but he is also a good “company man” he is clearly at pains to avoid offending any past or present CIA colleagues. He apparently never met a CIA Director that he didn’t like and rather gingerly mentions that James Schlesinger (CIA Director 1973) was disliked for his purging of the clandestine service, but conflates him with Admiral Stansfield Turner (USN ret.) (CIA Director 1977-1981). Signicantly he makes no mention of the fact that President Nixon also dismantled CIA’s ability to produce strategic intelligence by dissolving CIA’s Office of National Estimates (ONE) and replacing it with the politically more pliable National Intelligence Council. I would not recommend this book to the general public, but would say that intelligence aficionados would find it quite interesting.
