Chapters 4-6 comment on the main participant groups and the instruments that are traded. Chapters 7-8 look at foreign exchange trading from a micro, rather than macro, point of view - how an individual bank or other dealing firm sees things. Chapters 9-11 comment on some of the broader issues facing the international monetary system and how governments, central banks, and market participants operate within that system. This is followed by an epilogue.

Imagining the Holocaust, by Daniel R. Schwarz

In Imagining the Holocaust, Daniel R. Schwarz examines widely read Holocaust narratives which have shaped the way we understand and respond to the events of that time. He begins with first person narratives - Wiesel's Night and Levi's Survival at Auschwitz - and then turns to searingly realistic fictions such as Borowski's This Way to the Gas Chamber, Ladies and Gentlemen, before turning to the Kafkaesque parables of Appelfeld and the fantastic cartoons of Spiegleman's Maus books. Schwarz argues that as we move further away from the original events, the narratives authors use to render the Holocaust horror evolve to include fantasy and parable, and he shows how diverse audiences respond differently to these highly charged and emotional texts.

Content is Good, but Ebook Formatting is Terrible
By S. Bolinger
The overall structure and content of this book is good. That being said, the ebook formatting make it almost unusable. Some pages have very small text, on others chunks of text are all over the page or running off the page. I've tried this on a couple of different devices and it appears to be the ebook, not the reader. Sadly, as there are no refunds for ebook downloads, I'm just stuck with a $50+ ebook with broken formatting. It's great to see that Amazon has halted the sale of the ebook version and I hope they provide an updated version to those of us who purchased the sub-standard product. Until then, grab the paper version.

A good overview but falls short
By A. Spence
As an overview of Information Technology law across a wide variety of jurisdiction, this book does succeed in providing a good overview and an introduction to some basic concepts. However the written expression throughout is poor and the level of detail too often falls short. Coupled with a very small font in the print edition, and it makes for an unpleasant reading experience, and poor value for one seeking a research aid.

A bit patch and unfocused
By Robert Janissen
The book provides solected issues in IT law, but the topics seem a bit random and the attempt to be broad is at the cost of detail

Enteroimmunology: A Guide to Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Disease, by Charles A Lewis

Over half of the body’s immune cells reside in the mucosal lining of the intestines. These cells, along with other mechanisms, protect the body from parasitic, bacterial, viral and fungal infection. The enteric immune system is highly competent at specifically targeting infectious agents, however, the immune system often also reacts to foods and other antigens presented to it. Enteroimmunology is an emerging field of medicine which elucidates how maladaptive reactions of the enteric immune system cause inflammatory disorders of multiple organ systems. These immune reactions, along with the production of cytokines and other immune modulators are responsible for much of the chronic disease burden in Western society. Enteroimmunology explains the metabolic and immune pathways, which when out of balance, give rise to chronic disease. This text provides the scientific rational for understanding enteroimmune disease, and provides a clinical guide for tertiary preventive treatment of these diseases. Enteroimmune diseases are not just bowel diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease, but also include both systemic and neurological diseases. Through explanation of the immune pathology underlying diseases local to immune reactions in the gut, it becomes clear how these same immune mechanisms cause systemic and neurological disease. Enteroimmunology explains the emerging understanding of the ecology of the gut and its relationship with diet, food and nutrition, and includes citations for nearly 2000 medical journal articles. It describes how IgG antergies to food, which are analogous to IgE allergies, cause a wide array of disease symptoms. This book explains leaky gut syndrome, small bowel overgrowth, dysbiosis, metabolic syndrome and how to achieve long-term effective resolution of these conditions through diet. The book gives examples of a variety of conditions and the pathological processes which underlie the causal mechanism of the diseases, and then provides a guide to the tertiary treatment for the condition. There are chapters on obesity and metabolic syndrome, fibromyalgia, autoimmune diseases, interstitial cystitis, sexual dysfunction, acne and other diseases. Neurological diseases discussed include autism, migraine, depression, multiple sclerosis and rage disorder. A chapter is dedicated to cancer prevention that explains the dietary factors responsible for the majority of human cancers, and which gives practical evidenced based advice for cancer prevention. A chapter is dedicated to explain the role of sleep disorders in enteroimmune disease. A chapter on mitochondrial health explains aging, and provides information of how individuals can maintain vibrant, healthy, mitochondria.

A Must Read for Medical Practitioners
By christopher butler
Enteroimmunology deftly illustrates the most important connection in the treatment of chronic diseases, namely the Gut -Immune connection. It does so with an attention to detail, and easy to read descriptive language, that is hard to find in these types of texts. The understanding it brings to this highly complex and cutting edge medical subject is phenomenal. If your in the practice of Functional medicine you owe it to your patients to read this book...a few times.

Must Read
By Jacob Schor
This book is written for the practicing physician or advanced medical student. For them it is a must read. For the general public, well perhaps more than they might want to chew on. Lewis provides the most useful overview of digestion, gut function, and gut dysfunction I have yet read. He makes the connection between gut dysfunction and chronic disease and provides valuable insights into treating the autoimmune diseases directly triggered by intestinal problems.

A masterpiece
By Gabriel F. MD
This book gives an Euclidean logic to medicine. We can treat the cause of disease and no its signs and symptoms. It also has an ability to open new doors of knowledge. I will help to improve the health of many people. The only small complaint is its index.
Anyway, the best book I have read in my entire career.
Thanks Dr. Lewis.
Gabriel. Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Extraordinary Accomplishment
By M. Coffey
Tim Dlugos died of AIDS in 1990 at age 40. People who knew his work back then realized that he was an impressively talented poet. But it was not until his friend David Trinidad put together this magnum opus of Dlugos's work that the extent of his accomplishment could be seen in full. The result of years of research and editing, this book makes clear that, despite his early death, Tim Dlugos deserves recognition as a major voice in 20th century American poetry.

The major AIDS poet writes in plain language about his life in NYC, describing "the tangled postures lovers learn"
By H. Williams
In March 2015 for National Poetry Month, the book discussion group at The LGBT Center in NYC read poetry by Tim Dlugos from "A Fast Life: The Collected Poems of Tim Dlugos." Despite the horrible snowstorm, we had a terrific turnout, including one member who actually knew Dlugos, and some absolutely enlightening and inspiring discussion. (This is why we discuss books and poetry.)

I sometimes have a difficult time reading poetry. This book was huge ("a real door-stopper," somebody called it) so I originally chose a dozen poems to try to focus the reading to a reasonable length, which may have been helpful but also biased the reading toward his later more depressing poems. Many of the early poems are lighter (some of them very light) and don't really point toward the serious tone his writing takes near the end of his life. The poems I originally selected:
SHELLEY WINTERS (a pop culture poem recalling Frank O'Hara)
POEM AFTER DINNER (an occasional poem)
GILLIGAN'S ISLAND (pop culture and commentary)
JE SUIS EIN AMERICANO (humor)
CLUBS I'VE JOINED (a very smart list poem)
AT THE POINT (memoir)
SONNET ("The night he leaves you," more about NYC)
DESIRE UNDER THE PINES (on Fire Island)
SODOM (on The Mineshaft)
SPY OF LOVE (another well-controlled sonnet)
CHRISTOPHER ISHERWOOD (haiku-like brevity and clarity)
THE STEVEN HAMILTON SESTINA (a masterwork of style and meaning)
SLEEP LIKE SPOONS (such a touching ending, such terrific language)
POWERLESS (a major poem and the title of one of his collections)
G-9 (the great AIDS poem made up of short lines holding on for life)
IT USED TO BE MORE FUN (on being mortal and a poet)
RADIANT BABY (on Keith Haring)
D.O.A. (a final poem)

Dlugos's life and work cannot be separated. He was a Catholic monk who left the monastery at the age of 21 in 1971 to become an activist for political and gay causes. He originally moved to Washington, DC, before he moved to NYC. In both cities, he made friends with a number of the leading gay poets and authors of the period including Michael Lally, Joe Brainard, Brad Gooch, Eileen Myles, and Dennis Cooper, among many others whom he identifies in his poems. He was a denizen of the newly liberated gay world found in NYC during the late 1970's before he eventually sobered up and enrolled in the Yale Divinity School, where he hoped to become an Episcopal priest. He was diagnosed with AIDS in 1989 and died in 1990 at the age of 40.

Dlugos is widely known for the poems he wrote while living with HIV and AIDS and is considered the seminal poet of the AIDS epidemic. His long narrative poem "G-9" (which was the name of the AIDS ward at Roosevelt Hospital) is considered one of his major accomplishments.

The critic Marjorie Perloff wrote, “This is poetry of extraordinary speed and energy that fuses fact and fantasy, dream and documentary. Tim Dlugos’ every nerve seems to vibrate.”

Much of his early poetry does seem very fast. The comparison to Frank O'Hara is inevitable (think "The Lunch Poems"). Much of his writing, if not almost all of it, is personal and autobiographical. He's full of pop culture references, and a number of attendees enjoyed reading about NYC in the 1970's and looking for the references: clones, Christopher Street, Danny's Potbelly restaurant, the Ninth Circle hustler bar, streets and addresses, music and bars, and churches and clubs. Many of these references already need footnotes and future readers will depend on quickly disappearing information that may completely slip away any day now.

His language is very common and most of his writing is about everyday events: I had lunch with this guy, I slept with that guy, I thought about another guy, I'm watching TV and going to the movies now, then then going dancing. The complaint is that he doesn't elevate language or his daily occurrences to the level of "great" poetry. He's a regular guy with a specific cadence and consistent point of view, and the poetry often seems uninspired and uninspiring. While modern poetry is written in everyday speech, Dlugos has the ability to show his skill with the use of formal poetic forms.

His most serious free-verse poem, as noted above. is "G-9." It's long and discursive. But two of his other great poems, which we discovered from readers at the meeting, may be able to give you a feeling for his writing. If you don't read anything else, you might want to read these. For the THE STEVEN HAMILTON SESTINA, look at the ending words of the lines in each of the stanzas and then how all the words get used in two lines at the end. For SLEEP LIKE SPOONS, pay attention to the biblical references and the beautiful imagery.

Why Vietnam Invaded Cambodia: Political Culture and the Causes of War, by Stephen Morris

On December 25, 1978, the armed forces of Vietnam launched a full-scale invasion of Cambodia. That event marked a turning point in the first and only extended war fought between two communist regimes. The Vietnamese forced out Pol Pot’s Khmers Rouge regime from its seat of power in Phnom Penh, but the ensuing war was a major source of international tension throughout the last decade of the Cold War.

This book is the first comprehensive, scholarly analysis of the causes of the Vietnamese invasion. At its core are two separate but related histories covering the years 1930 to 1978. The first concerns the continuing difficult relations between the Vietnamese communist party and the Cambodian communist movement. The second records the fluctuating and often conflicted relations between the Vietnamese communist party and the two most powerful communist states, the Soviet Union and China. These two histories are encased by a theoretical introduction and a conclusion that make clear the need for a “political culture” perspective on international relations.

The author argues that key events leading up to the Vietnamese invasion and occupation of Cambodia present a historical puzzle. Many important decisions made by both the Vietnamese and Cambodian leaders are inexplicable in terms of the “rational actor” assumptions that dominate contemporary international relations theory. Instead, the author argues, these decisions can be explained only if we understand the political cultures of the rival states.

This book is the only study of Southeast Asian affairs by a Western scholar who has used the rich archives of the former Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The key sources drawn on constitute confidential records of the former sponsor and ally of Vietnamese communism; they also provide fresh light on Chinese and Soviet foreign policy, as well as recent events in Cambodia. They are supplemented by extensive materials from French and American archives, as well as interviews with some of the main political decisionmakers.

From Library Journal
Morris, an experienced academic and journalist, goes beyond earlier work in this cogent and lucid history. Vietnam invaded Cambodia (on Christmas Day, 1978) in an effort to eliminate the odious Pol Pot regime but instead got involved in a disastrous war with China that threatened to draw in the Soviet Union and the United States. Morris's interest in examining this event is twofold. First, he uses newly available Soviet archives, long-term research, and interviews to chronicle the origins of the war, its roots in the 1930s, and the breakdown of relations between former revolutionary allies. But his larger purpose is to critique contemporary international relations theory as being too narrowly rational. He argues that theories of political culture use leader psychology, the ethic of paranoid regimes, and the international system of Communist nations to explain these wars (and, by extension, others), which were not in any rational national interest. Recommended for university and larger public collections.ACharles Hayford, Evanston, IL

Review
"Morris's study offers a careful and thorough investigation of a complex and important topic. His analysis is valuable in focusing attention on cultural and historical factors that are often ignored in contemporary international relations theory. Written in a clear and accessible style, the book should appeal not only to the Asian specialist, but also to the general reader interested in world affairs."—William J. Duiker, Pennsylvania State University

"Stephen Morris is able to illuminate the mysteries surrounding the origins of the only extended war between communist states by skillfully reconstructing the chiliastic political culture of the decision makers. He is able to ground this analysis on solid documentation, for he is the only Western Southeast Asia specialist to have gained access to the archives of the Soviet Communist Party Central Committee. The result is a study that captures the passions and the mind-set of the true believers of late-stage Leninism as they played out a final drama of communism." —Lucian Pye, Professor of Political Science Emeritus, MIT

"Morris' vivid analysis . . . delves into the causes of the only extended war between two communist states. As the first Southeast Asian specialist to gain access to the recently opened Moscow files on the Indochinese Communist Party, Morris ably documents the paranoid style of thinking that characterized these Marxist-Leninist leaders." —Foreign Affairs

Superbly researched and carefully argued
By Nguyen Ngoc Linh
This book is undoubtedly one of the few "must have" books on Vietnam and Cambodia. The author has produced a very carefully argued and superbly researched analysis of the Vietnamese relationship with Cambodia and the Vietnamese relationships with the Soviet Union and China. It shows how our conventional thinking in terms of states only pursuing their national security or economic interests doesn't explain why the Vietnamese and the Khmers Rouges each provoked their larger neighbors (The Khmers Rouges provoked Vietnam and Vietnam provoked China). The idea that the weak can provoke the stronger goes against our "common sense" understanding of how states behave, but it obviously did happen in these cases. Morris also has a very good writing style (I even found the more abstract conceptual discussion in the introduction and conclusion quite easy to follow) and the narrative flows quite nicely. He has also introduced the concept of "hyperMaoism" to explain the outlook of the Khmers Rouges, which is something that I find quite insightful. His research in Soviet archives also brought forth some fascinating revelations, regarding how little the Vietnamese leadership knew and understood about the motives of the Khmers Rouges leaders. And the Soviet documents also bring completely new information on how Vietnam's relations with China broke down during the 1970s. I had read every book published on the Vietnamese communists and the Khmers Rouges, but this book has taught me a lot that I didn't know. The tone of the work is quite dispassionate, and its approach completely objective, as Morris tries to get inside the thinking of all of the parties to the conflict. Highly recommended.

Well-documented history followed by a bold assessment.
By Richard Arant
A scholarly analysis of the history behind the 1978-89 Vietnamese invasion and occupation of Cambodia, followed by the author's brutally frank assessment of the consequences. As the author states, a final assessment is premature, but recent events do indeed cause the reader to wonder how long the Vietnamese will continue to be pleased with the tactics of its "clients". Readers will also want to review "Falling Out of Touch" by Goscha and Engelbert for another look at historical relations between the Vietnamese and Cambodian communists.

Great Book On Little Known Subject
By Joseph Pacelli
Steven Morris's work on this book is amazing. I have such a better understanding of the conflict between Cambodia and Vietnam from the early '70s to 1989. North Vietnam, China and the USSR are culpable regarding the victory of Pol Pot in 1975, and not American bombing as so many Stalinists try to claim. N. Vietnam had their eyes on Cambodia all along, but had to buy their time during the conflict with the U.S.
