Not quite what I was expecting. It's a children's activity booklet. I had anticipated something a little more in depth, but I suppose it was my own fault for not reading the description a bit more.

If you're looking for something for a younger child who likes to draw and loves pixar this is the item for you, otherwise it's mildly disappointing.

Bought this book because I am doing a certification course which requires some level of understanding of statistics. From page 1 the book outlines the basics and builds on the rest of the subject matter. Lots of examples and excercises.

Feels like it's been done before

Oh man, I don't want to be the heartless person who didn't like this book, but what can I say, I'm the heartless person who didn't like this book. It's about Ivo. He's 40, he's in a hospice and he's dying from complications from diabetes. The nurse looking after him suggests that he thinks of a story from his life to correlate with a body part, starting with A ("Adam's Apple" , "Anus", "Ankle" and "Arms") and working through the alphabet. So this is Ivo's story, told in disjointed memories that gradually come together, as he thinks about Mia, the love of his life.

It took me a while to get into this book, as it seems to dance around all over the place until you have enough pieces to have some sense of the puzzle. But once I got past that stage, I just expected there to be more in terms of a payoff. Ultimately Ivo has made some silly decisions in his life that make it hard to feel a great deal of compassion for him, particularly as he is unwilling to forgive others for mistakes that he was complicit in. Remember how useless and self-destructive Dexter was in "One Day". Well Ivo is like that in triplicate. I never felt terribly connected to any of the characters in the book with the exception of his nurse, Sheila.

It's obvious how a book like this will end but I found the ending curiously unmoving. Maybe I've read too many similar books lately, but it felt kind of cliched and unoriginal. Very similar to "Before I Die" by Jenny Downham, for one.

I know this is a debut novel and I feel like James Hannah is a real talent. I would definitely read other books by him, but this one was a misfire for me.

A beautiful and thoughtful read which will leave a lasting impression

Ivo is only in his 40s yet he is in a hospice because he is dying. It isn't obvious at first what he is suffering from, but from the moment the reader meets Ivo it is evident that he is immensely sad. Of course, being terminally ill is enough reason to feel depressed but Ivo also seems lonely with nothing left to fight for in the remainder of his life. Until his nurse suggest the 'A to Z' game to keep him distracted; for each letter of the alphabet he should think of a body part and a memory that goes with it.

From the moment Ivo starts the game inside his head, we tumble into the past and through a series of flashbacks we get to know who Ivo was before he was dying: a man who fell head over heels into an unexpected but beautiful love story before a devastating faith turned him resentful towards those around him. While there was no happy ending for this romance, reliving his past Ivo has the chance to reflect upon his choices and he comes to the realisation that he has to decide whether he can make amends with the other people who were once so significant in his life – before it is too late.

The A - Z of You and Me tells a harrowing story with an inevitable heartbreaking finish, yet there are also surprisingly beautiful moments hidden within its pages. Told from an ingenious perspective, flitting back and forth through Ivo's life, there is never enough time for the reader to get completely sucked into the hopeless state of the present and instead there is a joy when Ivo first meets the love of his life, and the many wonderful things they have a chance to share in their short time together.

Of course there are plenty of poignant moments too, there was a particular moving storyline involving a regular visitor to the hospice that managed to make me choke up towards the end, but alternating with the A - Z game I never felt that this ultimately hugely disheartening story was a heart-wrenching tearjerker all the way through.

It takes a special skill to make such a gloomy tale, especially one with a selfish and unlikeable protagonist as the bitter Ivo, a beautiful and memorable reading experience and author James Hannah certainly has this. He has transformed what is ultimately an incredibly distressing story into a thoughtful and worthwhile novel; one that will make the reader think and leave a lasting impression.

A well-crafted mystery, impossible to stop once begun

A moving story of a 40 yr old man spending his final days in a hospice. As readers, we are caught up in his game of going from A to Z, picking a body part per letter and remembering a story for each. He's doing this because he has specifically stated that he wants no visitors, after his only one has caused him to get very upset. We are privy to only bits and pieces of the reasons why he is so tormented; as the story unfolds we learn more. Is our protagonist the cause or recipient of the emotional pain that surrounds him? The story is fascinating and emotionally engaging; it holds your interest even as the tidbits of the tale are few and far between. This is a well-crafted mystery that is impossible to stop reading once begun. I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

Pretty useful vocabulary builder

I have been using this set of 3 discs for about 5 weeks and have now ordered levels 2 & 3. The first disc is real basic stuff that gets you started, the second disc has lists of various types of vocabulary, like common nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, and prepostions, and it is really worth going over these time and time again so as to master both the vocabulary and the pronunciation of these basic word lists. At least once you have go the basic vocabulary down, you have something to build on, so it gets easier.
Disc three is more phrase oriented, though it should be born in mind that each lesson is designed to illustrate some kind of grammatical rule. For some reason my disc set came with the wrong book (French instead of Spanish) so I have relied totally on the audio, though I do have a basic Spanish book that I refer to occasionally if I can't properly identify the spelling of a word from what I hear.
The only beef I do have is that while some of the phrases are obviously very useful, like "donde esta el banco mas cercano?" (where is the nearest bank?), others are not. You can just imagine landing in a Spanish speaking country and the first thing out of your mouth is asking for the nearest ATM or bathroom, but not all of the pattern sentences in the exercises are as useful.
It IS hard work learning Spanish this way, but if you do a lot of driving or can take a CD player with you wherever you are, then it is also incredibly economical with what would probably otherwise be dead time used productively. Being able to communicate in Spanish is an incredibly valuable skill in the workplace these days, and even if you don't use it for that, there are so many Spanish-speaking tourism destinations in the Western hemisphere that learning Spanish while you drive around can only widen your scope. I have already found that after 5 weeks of using this plus the Instant Immersion Spanish discs in my car I can understand lengthy chunks of spoken Spanish, read newspapers and understand 85%, and understand Spanish language posts on the Internet tolerably well. My speech still needs a lot of work, but that is to be expected.
So, yes, I do recommend this set of discs, but I would use them in conjunction with something else for variety. You will still spend a lot less and learn a lot more than you would going to classes or on a course. Spanish will be my fifth language, if you count English as one, so I do know of what I speak.

Excellent for beginners

I found the lesson structure very effective. They begin simply and build on previous lessons. I had no prior experience with Spanish, but after completing the Level 1 tapes I would feel comfortable trying to communicate basic needs and questions.
I agree with some of the other reviewers that a separate book would be helpful to learn written Spanish. However, the included booklet was all I needed to successfully learn the vocabulary on these tapes. (By the way, I've tried other language methods that do not provide ANY written materials which was very ineffective for me personally. I need to see a word to fully comprehend it and how to say it.)
I ordered the cassettes (since the CD version was backordered), and I did experience some slight volume variances. The volume changes were slight and rare, so overall they didn't impact my ability to learn the materials. I've just ordered Level 2 on CD, so hopefully that won't be an issue.
My one complaint--about the cassettes specifically--is the difficulty of finding the start of a lesson while rewinding. That's an issue with the medium, not the manufacture of the tapes. Hopefully the CDs will make finding the lesson starts easier.

Convenient

Hello.
Nearly all of these lessons are a convenient size for those around-town trips - not too long, not too short - and are a great way to use some of those otherwise-lost minutes driving to and from work.
Any less-than-ideal elements to these CDs? Yes. I have no opportunity to speak the Spanish I'm learning (apart from speaking along with the CDs), so most of my skill, so far, is in listening and reading rather than speaking. However, I can tell that when I find myself in a situation requiring the use of the language, it will be an easy next step.
I've nearly completed this first set and will soon order the second.

I still like Briscoe's Books, But I Should Have Passed On This One

I thoroughly enjoyed Susan Briscoe's Japanese Quilt Inspirations. However, if I had seen this book, Japanese Style, in a bookstore, I would have passed on it. It's pretty rare that I say that about the books I buy sight unseen.

This book works well as starting place for Briscoe's subtly extraordinary work. But if you already own any of her books, you might be disappointed, and worse, you might already own much of the content here. For example, three projects were already published in Japanese Quilt Inspirations.

Am I the only one getting a bit irked by designers and publishers reusing content from previous publications? (Seriously, I'd love to know.) But what's more irksome is I would have known about the duplication had I used the "Look Inside" feature to examine the table of contents. I had this on pre-order and I am not sure it was even available then, but I wish I had waited. At the very least, this publisher could have documented in which other books the projects previously appeared.

My advice for potential shoppers is to use the "Look Inside" feature, check out the table of contents, and maybe save yourself some disappointment. Or save your money for one of Susan Briscoe's other very fine books.
