Great way to quickly get ramped up on the UMBRACO framework
By Codesulting
I have used umbraco for a couple of years now and have really enjoyed it.
With the new version of umbraco coming out just around the corner (v5) i was excited to see that they just released a book.
Spoiler: If you are looking for a book talking about v5 (mvc or razor) this isn't it.
Even though I have used umbraco for so long there was still a few things that I learned from the book.
This book in my opinion is for an entry level umbraco developer or admins who needs to get ramped up on the framework quickly or someone who has used the framework to confirm they are following the best practice and making the most of the tool set.
What developers/admins can get out of this book:
- installation instructions
- Upgrade how to demo
- Document Type structure best practices
- Data types what they are and how to use them
- User permissions
- Sample code demos
-- xslt
-- c# usercontrols
-- 3 lines of razor syntax
- Sample project demo (actually worth doing)
What admins (non developers) can get out of this book:
- How data types are used or intended to be used
- Publishing content from staging to production
- Intermediate understanding of what umbraco is and how it can be used
- Gives you an outside the box view of other uses for umbraco document type properties
-- you don't have to just give users a WYSIWYG if you need more control of content placement / styling -> you can define specific fields for them to enter content into and then embed those fields into your templates so you have full control over styling and placement.
-- also (which was a new way of thinking to me) you do not have to grant users access to the media section. If you only wanted them to be able to upload images specifically for the use on a document type you might as well just give them an upload field and place the image where you need it to go. It is easier for the user (UX) and you have more control of the media library as well.
I will keep this one on my book shelf and will use it as a 'De Facto' resource for members of my team and those who I train on the framework.

Great resource if you are using Umbraco for the 1st time. Wish I had this book for my 1st install of Umbraco. Worth the price.

Kindle content table needs more detail. Based on Web Forms rendering.
By Jan Egil Kristiansen
The contents table is much too brief for the Kindle version to be usable as a reference.
Maybe if I read it from beginning to end, and do a good job of adding bookmarks.
The book does mention 'Razor', but seems to be based on the old Umbraco rendering engine: .NET Web Forms. (My plan was concentrating on Razor/MVC, and ignore Web Forms.)
