About the Author
Gordon West, WB6NOA is the leading ham radio instructor in the U.S. He has been a licensed radio amateur for more than 50 years, and was named "Instructor of the Year" by the ARRL, and the 2006 "Amateur of the Year" by the Dayton Amateur Radio Association. Through his Gordon West Radio School, he has trained eight out of ten newly-licensed hams with his classes, books and audio courses over the past 35 years. Technical Editor Eric P. Nichols, KL7AJ, is a prolific author on radio science topics. He is especially adept at making complicated science understandable to the layman. The ARRL awarded him their William Orr Technical Writing Award in 2010 and again in 2014.

Excellent tool for studing to pass the General Exam.

I use this book as a companion to the ARRL General license manual text book. If you are interested in studying to "just" pass the test this is a 5 star book and a must have. If you wish to learn the details of why and how then it does not always serve that purpose and so form me I gave it 4 stars but the rating is based on the students needs and purpose.

What a great book! This was the only book I used ...

What a great book! This was the only book I used to pass the General Exam. I studied for both the Tech and General at the same time. For the Tech, I just studied the questions and filled in a few of the "gaps" in understanding with a few google searches. I used this book and a question study/practice test app on my phone for the General. That was it.
One thing I will say is when I started it and realized that they rearranged the questions in what they said was a more logical order, I thought "big deal" and that it didnt really matter. Getting into the material, I realized that there is real value just in how they organized the questions and laid out the topics. I have to believe a large amount of work went into that reorganization, and it really payed off.
Here is the one thing I will say about the book, and it is not a negative. It is just something to know. I have a bachelors and masters degree in engineering (chemical), so even though I took very little circuits and "electrical stuff" in college, I am not unfamiliar with technical material in general and circuits and electrical principals specifically. If you are not all that technical (e.g. a Volt is that car Chevy makes and resistance is what you get from the kids at dinner), then you will likely want to add at lest one or two other foundational books to this as well. The authors do a great job of explaining a lot of things and the informational sidebars are great. However, the explanations are not always exhaustive or entry level. Again, not a negative, if it was exhaustive the book would be 9000 pages and boring as all get-out. So if you are less technically inclined, get this book AND some basic ones to supplement.

First Gordo book for me. Turns out this is a test question review book, not the theory book that I was hoping for. I'll use this to study along with my older ARRL guide for the theory information that I need.
