Gr 9 Up–Expansive in scope, this highly readable and illustrated compendium covers from the Spanish conquests of the New World and the Salem witch trials to the September 11 terrorist attacks and cyber-crime in the 21st century. Extending beyond the traditionally infamous gangsters, juvenile delinquents, and serial killers, Wolcott and Head's thoughtful and thorough analysis brings gender, race, and political issues into focus as well. It attends to women criminals (Lizzie Borden) and activists (Ida B. Wells) and issues such as domestic abuse and abortion-clinic bombing. There is a strong emphasis on the treatment of African Americans by the justice system, linking societal and justice issues to conditions established under slavery–a relationship that is traced from the abolition movement and the Underground Railroad up to the Rodney King beating and the Los Angeles riots of 1992. Each chapter presents a 10- to 12-page chronological analysis of an era, followed by a year-by-year time line and a fascinating three- to seven-page compendium of primary-source quotations and narratives. The four appendixes include 25 pages of excerpts from important documents, 33 pages of capsule biographies, and sections of maps, graphs, and tables. Though much of this material can be found in online databases, this engaging volume will prove useful to researchers who have an interest in the legal system.Herman Sutter, St. Agnes Academy, Houston, TX

Compendium on American Crime and Punishment!
By Mike O'Connor
Part of the Facts on File 'American Experience' series, David Wolcott and Tom Head's CRIME AND PUNISHMENT IN AMERICA supplies a wide-ranging history of crime in the U.S.A. and how American government and society have dealt with it. Though it might seem stodgy or scholarly at first glance, this 2010 publication is actually quite readable and informative.
CRIME AND PUNISHMENT IN AMERICA runs to 418 pages. The text is divided chronologically into chapters entitled: 'Old Crimes in the New World: 1500-1699,' 'A New System of Justice: 1700-1789,' 'The American Experience: 1790-1829,' and so on. Each chapter is prefaced by an essay summarizing crimes and punishments in that era along with economic conditions, current politics, societal development and response to crimes, etc. along with a 'Chronicle of Events.' Each chapter is then book-ended by a collection of 'Eyewitness Testimony' excerpts from contemporary newspaper articles, government documents, speeches, etc. that help capture the flavor of the times. Some of the authors of those excerpts make for interesting reading (i.e. Al Capone, Charles Manson, etc.) Various appendices are included containing relevant legal documents, biographies of major personalities and so on. Eighty-odd illustrations compliment the text.
Although the Wolcott/Head book is geared towards students, it should appeal to other readers as well. Its combination of easy-to-understand, insightful analysis and first-person accounts keep things interesting. The book goes beyond 'the usual suspects' - murderers and gangsters - and examines political, social, gender and race issues that were always part of the crime/punishment mix. So, for instance, John Dillinger is covered but so is 9/11, Lizzie Borden, Ida Wells, slavery, abortion, the 1992 L.A. riots, Prohibition, domestic abuse, Clarence Darrow, etc.
All in all, CRIME AND PUNISHMENT IN AMERICA is an accessible, informative and thought-provoking examination of some weighty issues. Recommended.
